WHY IS ISAIAH IN

the Book of Mormon?

ISAIAH'S NAME MEANS “THE LORD IS

SALVATION.” A PROPHET IN JERUSALEM DURING 40 YEARS, 740–701 B.C.

PROPHESIED ABOUT CHRIST AND THE

RESTORATION OF THE GOSPEL.

2 NE 11:2-4

•   And now I, Nephi, write more of the words of Isaiah, for my soul delighteth in his words. For I will liken his words unto my people, and I will send them forth unto all my children, for he verily saw my Redeemer, even as I have seen him.

•   …wherefore, I will send their words forth unto my children to prove unto them that my words are true. Wherefore, by the words of three, God hath said, I will establish my word. Nevertheless, God sendeth more witnesses, and he proveth all his words.

• Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ

2 NEPHI 11:8

•   And now I write some of the words of Isaiah, that whoso of my people shall see these words may lift up their hearts and rejoice for all men. Now these are the words, and ye may liken them unto you and unto all men.

IMPORTANT FACTS TO CONSIDER:

The 'Isaiah chapters' come when the family have at last reached the promised land.

IN 1 NEPHI 19:24, NEPHI CALLS THEM "A BRANCH WHO HAVE BEEN BROKEN OFF."

In the same verse he says he writes the words of Isaiah "that ye may have hope".

They were Israelites, away from Jerusalem and home. They had heard their father's prophecies about the destruction of Jeru-salem and the Babylonian captivity.

SO WHY?

• These things probably weighed on their minds and caused them pain. This is why Nephi gives them the prophecies of Isaiah concerning Christ. He wants to give them hope and comfort them.

HE ALSO KNEW ISAIAH IS HARD FOR US!

• “…for I know that they shall be of great worth unto them in the last days; for in that day shall they understand them; wherefore, for their good have I written them.” (2 Ne. 25:8)
