The “Global Studies Peace and Security in Africa” Cooperation between AAU and Uni.Leipzig in the Context of Transnational Higher Education

• one of very few universities cooperations in the humanities and social sciences in Ethiopia
• the only one with joint degrees (cooperation on equal eye level) for master students
• attracts students from a wide range of countries making it the most international programme that AAU currently has
• attracts students from the global north to enroll in a full degree, tuition based, two year programme in an Ethiopian university
contributing to a change in the directionality of student mobility (used to be mainly East to West, South to North) to include African universities

• strong in promoting the gender balance among students and enabling female master and PhD students
• greatly connected to the wider African academic community through its partner, the Institute for Peace and Security Studies
• recipient of DAAD funding throughout the first four years, however soon able to operate independently
• implementation done by professors, independent curriculum design and teaching methods to promote jointness
• successful in acquiring additional DAAD scholarships (by now 25.000 €) to wave fees for students

• study programme of 1. and 2. year is provided by teaching staff of the UL (both in Addis Ababa and Leipzig) and the IPSS
• Modules taught by UL staff will be taught as blocks (partly successively, partly in parallel)
• modules of the 1., 3. and 4. term: taught at AAU, modules of 2. term: taught at UL (two-months study period at UL; sandwich term at UL also for PhDs)
• German language classes in preparation of study period at UL

• Diriba Kuma, mayor of Addis Ababa visited Leipzig in May with delegation
• Investment Forum attended by students to network with employers
• Burkhard Jung, mayor of Leipzig to visit Addis Ababa in February 2015 to hand over first joint degrees in graduation ceremony
• Joint celebration of Ethiopian New Year in Leipzig
