In March of 2010, Apple released a new line of tabletcomputers call the iPad.Since then educators and librarians worldwide have been attempting to harness thisnew form of mobile technology to helpsupport new initiatives in learning andliteracy on college campuses. Suggestions Create an iPad loan and usage police. Consider which apps to preload on iPads. Staff training. Experimenting with subject specialty iPad (onefor art, another for music, medicine, etc). Accessories. Consider a blue tooth keyboard. 7. iPads and Roaming Reference Model: Geoffrey R. Weller library, University of Northern British Columbia Resulted in 228 additional reference questions. Provide point of need service using a device with better portabilitythan a laptop. Integrated virtual chat services so students could contact theroaming reference librarian and initiate a face-to-face transaction.(McCabe and MacDonald, 2011) 8. DrawbacksNavigating and conducting research in librarydatabases was reported to be rather cumbersome by staff members.(Pssst, a wireless/blue tooth keyboardmay be a helpful accessory for thisparticular problem.) 9. Additional Examples Morris Library at Southern Illinois University purchasediPad2s for their roaming reference program and conductedvirtual video chat sessions with patrons. Provided a unique element for instruction. Librarians couldshow patrons images of reference resources, books,computer screens displaying a search in a database, oreven a quick walking tour of the library (Lotts & Graves,2011). 10. Suggestions Staffcomfort level using iPads before beginningroaming reference service. Librarians must be more proactive atapproaching students when conducting roamingreference. Appropriate scheduling. Integrating virtual/video chat. 11. In Conclusion: Say no to techno lust. Our goal is not to use one newgizmo to replace another simply because its new andshiny. Determine its strengths and weakness in your particularlibrary environment, and whether it enhances yourservices to students, staff and faculty. 12.
