Selecting and Constructing photography for the music magazine

Page 2: Investigating Photography

I looked at a series of websites to find appropriate professional photography that I could use in my magazine. This is because: I need to have lots of options for what to

use in the magazine. I need to have plenty of variety that helps

to represent my music scene accurately.

Photography useful for a front page might be: Artists in dramatic poses

that focus on their character.

‘Pop-up’ figures that are cut out at the bottom

Unusual designs that can be used as album covers and adjusted in Photoshop

Close-ups and medium close-ups for secondary leads

Live shots, stage shots and poster-style shots

Backgrounds and textures

Photography useful for a contents page might be: ‘Mugshots’ of the editor

for the editorial ‘Framing images’ that

help to create a shape that the contents can work around

Close-ups of instruments, clothing etc for features with a special focus

More band and artist shots

Drawings and designs that represent artists / ideas

Unusual designs that can be used as album covers and adjusted in Photoshop

I like this photo because of the intense lighting. There is high key lighting on the subject meaning she is fully lit from the front. I also like this effect as it creates heavy shadows behind.

This photo could be used for a magazine front cover as it is a medium close-up (from the upper-chest upwards) meaning that it is in perfect composition.

It would influence the design of the page by the fact it is so close up and fills the page meaning it would be highly influential as to wear the text would be placed around it.

I like this image because of the drama of it and the intensity of the subjects pose with her back facing the camera. I also love the fact the shot has been taken in black and white, heightening the drama as well as the mood and the atmosphere of the photo.

It would be ideal to be used for a contents page due to the fact the subject is mostly kept to the left of the photo meaning it would be perfect for adding the page numbers and articles down the right-hand side.

I really like this photo because of the high dynamics and contrasts of the black clothing and the pale skin and blonde hair.

It could be used for a

front cover as I feel the composition of the photo would work highly well with text (the article titles) running down beside the subject.

I really like this image because of the relaxing, light-hearted appearance it has and the bright colours of the blue sky and the green landscape. I also like the innocence of the image, with the symbolism of purity carried through the white clothing and reinforced with the daisies in the subject’s hair.

This photo would be good for a contents page because the subject is in the right of the image meaning the left is all background, therefore the articles and page numbers could be added over the top of this.

I love this photo because of the simplicity of the both the clothing and pose/facial expression of the subject stressing her natural beauty.

This photo would be perfect to be used as the supporting image of a double-page spread article as there is a large amount of background space which would be ideal for adding text onto.

I like this image because of the dynamisms of it being shot in black and white. I also love the heightened exposure of the photo meaning that the black and white have been further intensified to create an extremely vivid mood and atmosphere.

This photo would work well as the grounds of a double page spread as in the backgrounds areas, such as the large area of white in the top right-hand corner, the text of the article could be added.
