Factors That Led to the Development of Feudalism

• Breakout of the Western Roman Empire

• Second wave of Germanic tribe invasions brought the age of warfare and disorder.

Page 6: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Factors That Led to the Development of Feudalism

• People turned to local lords. The kings and the church were not as powerful anymore.

• Lords sought allies from nobles.

• Land is the basis of these alliances.

Page 7: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

The Birth of Feudalism• Feudalism is based on the

“Lord-vassal” relationship.

• Lord will grant land to the vassal for military assistance.

• Vassals will given military assistance in exchange for land.

Page 8: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism
Page 9: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Feudalism• The land that is given is called

the “fief”.

• The system of relationship is done with a solemn ceremony in which vassals pledged loyalty to the king.

Page 10: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Feudalism• Vassals also received lord’s

protection and the land.

• Peasants living in the land are also granted to the vassal.

• Peasants did agriculture to support food supplies. They are also given protection.

Page 11: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Feudalism• Vassals aid lords during war

time.

• They have to raise ransom money if the lord is captured by the enemy.

• Vassals provided lodgings for the lord when travelling in their territory.

Page 12: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Feudalism• Vassals also give gifts to the

son of the king when it’s knighting time and when the daughters married.

• They also sat beside courts to help the king decide disputes.

Page 13: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Lord-Vassal Relationships• It is considered very complex.

• Same noble can be a vassal to several lords.

• Vassals can grant land to other nobles so that he can become a lord.

Page 14: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Lord-Vassal Relationships• All nobles were ultimately vassals

of the king.• Almost all nobles were knights• Training began at age 7, as a page,

under the guidance of the lady of the manor

• Became squires at age 15 and were trained by other knights

• Those deemed worthy were “dubbed” knights

Page 15: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Lord-Vassal Relationships• Knights are trained how to

wear an armor, ride a war-horse, fight with sword and lance.

Page 16: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Knighthood• Knights are expected to obey

the code of behavior called “chivalry”

• Knights are expected to fight bravely, to be loyal to his lord, and treat other knights with respect and courtesy.

Page 17: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Knighthood• Knights are also expected to

protect the women and children, and the weak.

• Priests blessed the future knights weapons and prayed for them.

• They are used to defend the Church against enemies.

The Manor

Page 20: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

The Manor• Life is centered on the

manor.

• Manor is the lord’s estate or large piece of land.

• Everything that is needed for daily life is produced in the manor.

Page 21: Introduction to the Medieval Period - Feudalism

Workers on the Manor• There were two groups of peasant

workers on the manor• Freemen- skilled workers who paid

rent and could leave the manor whenever they wished. (They usually had a skill needed by others on the manor.)

• Serfs – workers bound to the land by contract with the nobles. (They had no freedom - they where the noble’s property.)
