BECOMING RHETORICAL
THE IMPORTANCE OF RHETORIC What is rhetoric? Why do you think rhetoric is important in writing and communication?
ANALYSIS & PRODUCTION Analysis – “how communication has particular effects on people”
Production – “respond to different kinds of rhetorical situations with arguments and other rhetorical tools”
THE ART OF PERSUASION The traditional rhetorical triangle
THE RHETORICAL SITUATION OR ‘MOLECULE’ Acts of communication come from a dynamic mix of various elements
ExigenceSpeaker/CommunicatorPurposeAudienceMeans of Communication
BREAKING DOWN THE MOLECULE Exigence – The Invitation to Communicate The Speaker/Communicator – How Do They Convince Us of Their Relevance?
Purpose – What Does This Communication Want? Audience – Who is the Communication For? Means of Communication – Mode, Medium, Genre, Circulation (Rhetorical Technologies)
AUDIENCEThe intended recipient(s) of an act of communication:• Addressed – those who actually receive a text and
interact with it• Invoked – imagined by the authorAppealing to emotion: pathos• How messages persuade by arousing the emotions of an
audience• Can be obvious (inciting anger or hate) or subtle
(insecurity, passion, or uneasiness)• Different modes (print visual, aural, video) can achieve
pathos in different ways – it depends on the audience as to which is most effective
ALL THE FOLLOWING ‘TEXTS’ HAVE THE SAME MESSAGE –

PROJECT 1 Why Choose UI?
PROJECT 1 - OVERVIEWAt the end of this project, you will have written a blog post about some aspect of the University of Idaho, Moscow, or the surrounding area. The purpose of the project is to create a post explaining to new students why they should choose to come to UI.
The topic of the post is up to you.
Remember your audience and purpose in the creation of this project.
Once completed, I will collate all of your posts and publish them in our own class blog.
Your writing will be online for prospective students to see in the future
WHAT IS THE END PRODUCT?
750 – 1000 word piece of writing, including visuals. Submit either as a Word doc or PDF file.
We will discuss formatting nearer to the final draft.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT Get you thinking about how to effectively communicate an argument
Considering: Audience Purpose Exigence Speaker/communicator Means of communication
Opportunity to write creatively for a non-fiction topic Start creating a class community online
LEARNING OUTCOMES Accurately assess and effectively respond to a wide variety of audiences and rhetorical situations.
Focus on, articulate, and sustain a purpose that meets the needs of specific writing situations.
Explicitly articulate why you are writing, who you are writing for, and what you are saying.
AUDIENCE FOR PROJECT 1? Knowing your audience is important for this first project – you want to convince them of something so you need to be persuasive in how you communicate with them.
Not by tricking or manipulating them, but by appealing to their logic, their belief in you, and their emotions.
Remember, if you only appeal to one aspect, e.g. a post that just lists facts, your argument will not be as persuasive as addressing them all.
AUDIENCE FOR PROJECT 1? Who will be the audience for your communication? Go beyond just ‘prospective students’ by answering these questions fully:What does the intended audience, know, feel, value, or believe to be true about the topic of this communication?
What is the audience’s purpose in reading your piece of communication?
What does the audience think of you, the communicator?
What is at stake for the audience in the topic of this communication? What specifically do they stand to gain or lose as a result of the communication? In what circumstances will the audience encounter or use this communication, and how should it be designed accordingly?
