Intervention and Approaches• Pre School system abolished in Sikkim in 2010 after

RTE Act• Start of KG System decided on April 01, 2015• Identification of 31pilot project schools by JDs of

Districts• Handholding for rest schools already with it to be

done by respective district JDs• Planning section to work out all requirements for

select 32 and other existing schools by September 10, 2015

• Worksheets, play materials, classroom upgradation, teaching learning materials to be worked out

• Visit to reputed private schools within and outside state

Intervention and ApproachesTraining of 650 PRTs teaching Mathematics40 Graduate Teachers (Mathematics) were trained as

Master Trainers by SCERT across31 centres in the stateTeam for LKG and UKG in Sikkim formedTeam visited public and government schools and reported

upon pre-primary school systemTraining of teachers teaching English in Primary SectionAddresses weakness in Mathematics and English among

the childrenParents would be encouraged to enroll children in

Government schoolsSupports schemes like Chief Minister’s Meritorious

schools, 200 schools in 2017 (232 all together in 2017)• All 761 schools to be covered by 2018 (although normal

basis KG system in all schools are in operation)• Separate uniforms for KG Students• Enrollment of 3+ and 4 year old children in LKG• Enrollment of 4+ and 5 year old children in UKG• Design of Guidebooks for teachers• ECCE Key Resource Persons (KRPs)developed by NCERT• Handholding of PPTs and PRTs by KRPs in nearby

Applicability to Scale/ Other States’ Context• Concept of School Mother (SM) introduced in Sikkim in

the late 70’s: unique feature in India• Now Pre Primary Teachers (PPTs), yet SM concept

continues• RTE provisions DO NOT prohibit admission of kids below

6 years, other States may go ahead with KG• Aaganwadi to take care of Care part of ECCE and Early

Childhood Education taken care by HRDD• Social Justice/Women & Child Departments other States

may converge with HRDD/Education Departments• Like Sikkim, other SCERTs have ECCE contents in DIETs• Select schools for KG project phase-wise, assess success
