What is a web meeting (webinar)?

Generally includes:– One or more presenters on webcam (optional)– Presenters and (possibly) delegates on audio– Uploaded presentations or documents– A whiteboard with drawing tools– A chat pane to interact with delegates– File sharing– Screen sharing– Session recording

• A web meeting service account

• Fast internet connection

• Software plugins e.g Java, Flash

• Session plan• Confidence• A backup plan

The RSCs are now using Collaborate, one of the many commercial web meeting products

Some are free, most cost Some integrate with Moodle e.g Collaborate, Wiziq

Big Blue Button Currently in use by the various RSCs: Collaborate,

Adobe connect But there are lots more

So what are the benefits/issues?

Reduced costs– Travel expenses– time saved – “greener”

Support learners– Flexible– Accessible– quick to set up

The main problems tend to be – delegate computer audio and web access issues– Delegate inexperience/confidence/IT skills

Alternative methods of collaborating online

Combine Skype (which now has screen sharing), with access to online resources (VLE, website, Youtube, Googledocs etc.)

Desktop sharing application e.g Join me, Vyew Use a telephone conference call with online

resource sharing e.g. SlideShare, TitanPad, Conceptboard, Crocodoc
