It takes a village to educate a child South Africa has one of the highest rates of public investment in education in the world. At about 7% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 20% of total state expenditure, the government spends more on education than on any other sector. However, despite these investments the country still suffers a huge education deficit which, in the foreseeable future, will remain an extraordinary challenge to overcome. No one policy or single iniative can solve the country’s educational deficiencies or fulfill its needs in one sweep . The traditional African proverb, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ has been widely quoted when examining the partnerships required during the maturation of our youth. This proposal is an invitation to harness the power of the village to enable a learning environment designed for personal- and social development to empower young learners to achieve their highest potential. The village bring the world into the classroom to facilitate: Study- and Career Development Life Orientation Social Skills Development

The importance of Life-, Study- and Career Orientation and Development Wrong study- and/or career choices come at a high prize, both to individuals as well as to society: Personal disappointment and disillusion Higher early drop-out rates Cost of re-education or – training High rate of study-, career- or job switching Unmotivated, dissatisfied or disappointed workers Unemployment, short term, long term and permanent Though no specific studies have been done in South Africa, a number of studies in Europe points to the devastating costs of wrong study- and career choices. An example is a study done by the Dutch National Think Tank (Nederlandse Nationale Denktank) who calculates an annual loss of 5 Billion Euros (ZAR 65 billion) to society , traced back to wrong study- and career choices. Clearly the focus on Life-, Study- and Career Orientation is imperative and ought to receive as much attention as Mathematics, Science or any other vital subject.

To help learners to orientate themselves towards their future and to enable them to make motivated choices about their study- and career development, we have created talkUBUNTU, a social media learning platform which connects the workplace as well as civil society directly to the classroom. To help young people to orientate themselves, explore and learn from the various business and industrial sectors to help them to make informed choices about their future; To help young people to overcome the many dilemma’s they face in contemporary society; To help them to find their place in our society To enable and empower young people to become active citizens.
