• Rick Stiggins (1994) defines a portfolio as a collection of student work assembled to demonstrate student achievement or improvement. The material to be collected and the story to be told can vary greatly as a function of the assessment context.

• Vicki Spandell’s definition (NWREL): A purposeful collection of students' work that illustrates efforts, progress, and achievement.

• Stiggins (1994) also states, ".. portfolios are a means of communicating about student growth and development--not a form of assessment"(p.87).

“A portfolio tells a story. It is the story of knowing. Knowing about things…Knowing oneself… Knowing an audience.. Portfolios are students’ own stories of what they know, why they believe they know it, and why others should be of the same opinion”

(Paulson & Paulson, 1991, p.2)

Digital Storytelling

Storytelling is a great tool for reflection…

“stories are products of reflection… when we get into the habit of recording our stories, we can look at them again, attending to the meanings we build into them and attending as well, to our strategies of narrative description.

(Schön, 1998).

What type of portfolio will you create?

• Showcase portfolio (Students / teachers choose work that represents their best or favorite work from one subject or all subjects)

• Proficiency portfolio (Students / teachers choose work samples that show evidence of proficiency of standards)

• Project Portfolio (individual or collaborative)• Professional Portfolio (Business Classes-

could include resumes, cover letters, products that highlight skills for potential employment or job review

• Other (Record topography, geography)

Logistics

• Will the portfolio be passed on from grade to grade?

• Will it be sent home to parents at the end of each _____?

• Will the portfolio be assessed as part of the student’s grade? (or HOW will it be assessed)

Portfolio Contents• Will only finished products be included or

will “still in progress” samples be added?• Will students select only their best work?• Who will select the pieces? The student?
