And how these technologies can support people with hearing loss
Chat rooms A service that lets two or more people ‘chat’
to each other at the same time Most chat rooms are text-based and involve
typing instead of talking Often part of a website Often need to join the chat room or website
to get a username and password
Let you talk to people with same interests as you
Let you share information with other people all over the world
Break down barriers of hearing loss as no hearing required
Use Google to find – chat room + topic

Notes Many chat rooms let you read what is being
typed without needing to reply yourself – this is know as lurking
Some chat rooms let you send a message to one of the other people in the chat room privately – others in the chat room will not see it.
Shorthand is common, eg: LOL – laughs out loud
As are smileys (or emoticons):
Some chat rooms are moderated – there is someone checking what people are talking about and removing rude or inappropriate discussions
DeafandHoH.com
D/deaf dating – this is not a recommendation
