2. Definitions or Terms You Need to Know
The number line goes on forever in both directions. This is indicated by arrows.
Whole numbers greater than zero are called positive integers. These numbers are to the right of zero on the number line.
Whole numbers less than zero are called negative integers. These numbers are to the left of zero on the number line.
What I Know
Mrs. Glosser's Math Goodies 1998.
3. The integer zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative.
The sign of an integer is either positive (+) or negative (-), except zero, which has no sign.
Two integers are opposites if they are each the same distance away from zero, but on opposite sides of the number line. One will have a positive sign, the other a negative sign. In the number line above, +3 and -3 are labeled as opposites. ( Glosser,1998)

5. Using a Number Line
When adding one or more numbers you can use a number line.Watch the following videos for a quick peekNumber Line: http://www.goalfinder.com/product.asp?productid=139

6. Adding Negative Integers

  • Rule: The sum of two positive integers is a positive integer.

Example 2: Find the sum of each pair of integers.
Do not confuse the sign of the integer with the operation being performed. Remember that: +29 + +16 = +45 is read as positive 29 plus positive 16 equals positive 45.
Rule: The sum of two negative integers is a negative integer.
Example 1: Find the sum of each pair
of integers. You complete 2 and 3.
Do not confuse the sign of the integer with
the operation being performed. Remember
that: -2 + -9 = -11 is read as negative 2 plus
negative 9 equals negative 11.

8. Try out a Game
Deep Sea DuelOkta challenges you to a duel! That crazy octopus wants to play you in a game where the first person to choose cards with a specified sum wins. You can choose how many cards, what types of numbers, and Okta's level of strategy. (NCTM 2011)
