Deniz: Hi, Fırat! How you doing? Fırat: I’m Ok, thanks. How about

you? What you doing here?Deniz: Fine. This drink really

whisky as you drink water!Deniz: I am used to drinking it,

nothing happens to me.. You can count my glasses from now on! Haahaa…

A waiter approaches and… :‘Would you like to have another glass of apple juice?

Comments Deniz wanted to show off

to his friend, but end up bowing his head in shame!

What did Deniz claim?

What did he aim to emphasize by making such a claim?

What words of Deniz explain that he won’t be affected by drinking too much whisky?

How would you translate it into Turkish?

“To Be used to” explains familiar experiences, expressing that a situation/doing sth is OK for you and NOT a problem!

What do we mean with the following then?

I am used to driving in Istanbul.

I am used to the traffic in İstanbul

Page 4: Int be getusedto_presentationandtasks

Now it’s YOUR TURN What is your claim?

Have your say! What is the thing you have no problem doing it

(but others may have!)

“ TO BE FRANK, I AM USED TO………… ”

Teacher: ‘I am used to enduring a bunch ofTROUBLEMAKERS in class!

I can’ t get to sleep as I……………………………………………………………

Imagine you are an expert on social sciences.

You have been researching village life in Anatolia and observing a family who have spent all their life in the village.

Now think of their life style and tell what is normal for them in village life (something unfamiliar to those living in the city)

Page 7: Int be getusedto_presentationandtasks

THEY ARE USED TO..

Page 8: Int be getusedto_presentationandtasks

Now imagine that a family living in a village is planning to move to Istanbul. They will definitely feel alienated and have adaptation problems. Why do you think they will have trouble living in Istanbul? Explain: THEY ARE NOT USED TO…….’1.2.

BE can take many forms:

Present Tense- am/is/are Past Tense- was/were Present Perfect- has/have been USED TO Ving Past Perfect- had been

Future Tense will be  To BE An old man: ‘People were used to getting happy with small things and

had a happier life. However, nothing can make people really happy at present time although what they possess is incomparably much more compared to the times before 80s.

A teacher: Oh, it has been quite some time. In fact, I have been used to recognizing students’ imaginative skills while coming up with excuses for being late, absent, not being able to do their homework, why they couldn’t have heard the bell ringing, how they kept being busy by an emergent call from someone important……the never ending cycle!

Remember the same Family..

Imagine it has already been a year since they moved to Istanbul. They have already overcome some of their difficulties living here. These are:

They got used to the traffic in İstanbul.

They got used to watching TV for long hours as a form of entertainment.

Page 11: Int be getusedto_presentationandtasks

SO, THEY PARTLY GOT ADAPTED TO

THE LIFE IN ISTANBUL However, there are also some things

they could not get adapted to yet, such as: They haven’t got used to living in an apartment.

They couldn’t get used to keeping some distance in relationships with neighbours and strangers.

Page 12: Int be getusedto_presentationandtasks

In other words, the things they will get used to are:

They will get used to......

Page 13: Int be getusedto_presentationandtasks

At present, they are trying hard and probably..

They are getting used to….1.2.3.4.5.

5. If you think in the future you will be able to do sth without any difficulty, how can you express it???

6. What about this?? You want to stress that you overcame a difficulty/became adapted to sth.. How can you put this into words???
