21st Century
Nurkhamimi Zainuddin Ph.D
Instructional Technology: What
Are The Issues?
Cont.
Instructional and supportive applications of
computers.
Computers began to be used in
classrooms in 1960s until 1990 and was
known as Educational Computing.
By the mid-1990s, educational computing
became known as Educational or
Instructional Technology.
Cont.
“The historical function of Instructional
Technology is a process rather than a
product.” Saettler (1990)
Any useful definition of educational
technology, must focus on the process of
applying tools for educational purposes,
and the materials used.
Things To Ponder
Why integrate ICT into teaching and
learning?
When and how do we integrate ICT?
How much of ICT do we use?
Will ICT make learning more efficient and
more effective?
Important Reminders
Use ICT only when appropriate and when
it will make a difference to learning
Use the right tools and resources to help
achieve the learning outcomes
Consider the tools students already have
such as their mobile phones
Put ourselves in learners’ shoes

Instructional Design MODEL
ID Model
ASSURE Model – Heinich, Molenda, Russell,
Smaldino
ABCD Model – Knirk & Gustafson
ADDIE Model – Dick & Carey (1978)
Analyse
Analyse who the learners are
– What are their needs as learners?
How can the needs be best addressed?
– Consider learning styles
– Where or how can learning be cooperative &
collaborative (consider Bloom’s taxonomy for
the digital age)
– Which ICT tools would be suitable to use
– What learning resources are already available
– What learning resources need to be created

Media selection
Development
Development of instruction
- Generate lesson plans (different from
lesson planning) and lesson materials.
- Complete all media & materials for
instruction, and supporting documents.
Implement
The delivery of the instruction.
- Purpose is effective & efficient delivery of
instruction.
- Promote students’ understanding of
material & objectives, and ensure transfer of
knowledge.
Evaluation
Two related evaluations going on
simultaneously in most ID situations.
- Summative Evaluation
- Formative Evaluation
