DEGREES OF ADJECTIVES (comparative)

I – COMPARATIVO DE IGUALDADEAS + ADJETIVO + ASAnimal species are AS IMPORTANT AS plant species.As espécies animais são tão importantes quanto as espécies vegetais.Obs.: Em orações negativas o primeiro “as” pode ser substituído por “so”:

NOT SO / NOT AS + ADJECTIVE + ASAn eagle is not SO (= AS) RARE AS a condor.Uma águia não é tão rara quanto um condor.



II – COMPARATIVO DE INFERIORIDADELESS + ADJETIVO + THANSome species are LESS ADAPTABLE THAN others.Algumas espécies são menos adaptáveis do que outras.


III – C OMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADEa) Com adjetivos de três ou mais sílabas:MORE + ADJETIVO + THANGasoline is MORE EXPENSIVE THAN diesel. (Gasolina é mais cara que diesel).


b) Com adjetivos com uma ou duas sílabas:ADJETIVO + ER + THANA lion is STRONGER THAN a wolf. (Um leão é mais forte do que um lobo)Children are usually HAPPIER THAN adults. (Crianças são geralmente mais felizes que adultos)

I – SUPERLATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADEa) Com adjetivos de três ou mais silabas:THE MOST + ADJETIVOThis THE MOST EFFICIENT program of all. (Este é o programa mais eficiente de todos)


b) Com adjetivos de uma ou duas sílabas: THE + ADJETIVO + ESTFebruary is THE SHORTEST month of the year. (Fevereiro é o mês mais curto do ano)That is THE HEAVIEST machine in the ship. (Aquela é a máquina mais pesada do navio.


II – SUPERLATIVO DE INFERIORIDADETHE + LEAST + ADJETIVO This is THE LEAST IMPORTANT item in he list.Este é o menos importante item da lista.


Nota1) Os adjetivos monossilábicos terminados em -E e os dissilábicos terminados em PLE e BLE recebem R no comparativo e ST no superlativo:

large — larger — largest simple — simpler — simplest


2) Nos adjetivos monossilábicos e dissilábicos terminados em Y precedido por consoante, substitui-se o Y por I e acrescenta-se ER/EST:

dry – drier – driest happy – happier – happiest


3) Nos adjetivos terminados em consoante + vogal tônica + consoante, dobra-se a consoante final e acrescenta-se ER/EST:

big – bigger – biggest hot – hotter – hottest


4) Nos adjetivos dissilábicos terminados em ER, LY, OW e some, acrescenta-se EST ou usa-se MORE/THE MOST no superlativo.clever – cleverer (more clever) – cleverest (the most clever)yellow – yellower (more yellow) – yellowest (the most yellow)


5) Os demais adjetivos dissilábicos recebem MORE no comparativo e THE MOST no superlativo:fruitful – more fruitful – the most fruitful famous – more famous – the most famous


IRREGULAR FORMS (Alguns adjetivos apresentam irregularidades no comparativo e superlativo).Adjective Comparative Superlative Exemple

Good better the best He is the best athlete in the school.

Well (Healthy)

better the best He is still in hospital, but he is better than he was last week.

Bad worse the worst You are the worst driver I know.

Far farther the furthest My house is the furthest one.

Old older the oldest Your teacher is older than my teacher.


Os adjetivos OLD e FAR apresentam variações:Old – older – oldestOld – elder – eldest (indicam relações familiares)Your car is OLDER THAN mine (Seu carro é mais velho que o meu).


His daughter married my ELDEST son (A filha dele casou-se com meu filho mais velho).Far – farther/further – farthest/furthest (indicam distância)We live FARTHER THAN you (Nos moramos mais longe do que você).


Obs.: Embora FURTHER e FURTHEST se refiram a uma distância física, eles são mais usados para indicar adição ou intensidade (adicional, complementar, máximo):

diminuição gradual, usam-se as seguintes construções:

• a) THE + COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADE + THE + COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADE


THE CHEAPER THE WORSE (Quanto mais barato pior).THE MORE I help him THE MORE help he wants (Quanto mais eu o ajudo mais ajuda ele quer).THE LESS he smokes THE MORE impatient he gets (Quanto menos ele fuma mais impaciente ele fica).


b) COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADE + AND + COMPARATIVO DE SUPERIORIDADE The patient was getting FATTER and FATTER (O paciente estava ficando cada vez mais gordo).Nos adjetivos de três ou mais sílabas usa-se MORE AND MORE:

I am getting MORE AND MORE impatient (Estou ficando cada vez mais impaciente).
