MUSIC IN OUR LIVESA lot of people like many different types of music. We donot all like the same types of music but, probably, we alllike music. However, a recent study reveals that we don't

have the same feelings when listening to music. This study investigates the impact of different types of music

on tension, mood, and mental clarity. A total of 144 people completed apsychological profile before and after listening for 15 minutes to four typesof music - grunge rock, classical, New Age, and designer.

According to the study, when listening to grunge rock music there is asignificant increase of hostility, sadness, tension, and fatigue and there is asignificant reduction in caring, relaxation, mental clarity, and vigour.

In contrast, after listening to the designer music (music designed to havespecific effects on the listener) there is a visible increase in caring, relaxation, mental clarity and vigour, and significant decrease in hostility and fatigue.Unlike grunge rock music, which can make people feel like a bear with a sorehead, designer music can make people feel over the moon. The results for New Age and classical music were mixed.

But don't worry. The study does not mean that if grunge makesyou happy and relaxed you should stop listening to it. After all,we don't all react the same to different stimuli.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

28 UNIT 1

Shortly after the creation of the First Academy of Motion Picture Arts andSciences in 1927, film directors and producers started to discuss ways tohonour outstanding achievements in the new motion picture business. One of the most important ideas was the creation of a trophy. MGM art directorCedric Gibbons took the idea to several Los Angeles artists who submitteddesigns. The sculptor George Stanley proposed the figure of a knightstanding on a reel of film, hands gripping a sword. The Academy's world-renowned statuette was born.

Initially, Oscar was solid bronze. Then, due to a shortage of metal during World War II, Oscarswere made of painted plaster for three years. Today, the statuette is gold-plated britannium.

Oscar is thirteen and a half inches tall and weighs eight and a half pounds. He hasn't beenchanged since he was first created, except when the pedestal was made higher in 1945. Officiallynamed the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by its nickname, Oscar, theorigins of which aren't clear.
