My individual Mise En Scene Analysis

Dirty DancingThe actors are within close proximity to each other. This connotes romance and lust allowing the audience to recognise that it is a romance immediately.

The titles are coloured dark pink. Pink connotes romance and is also a convention of a romance genre. By using pink the audience can recognise straight away that the film is a romance, but they can also see that there is a romantic connection between the two characters.

The whole opening sequence is in black and white. This shows the audience that the film is set back in 1987. The black and white picture connotes older times showing the audience that this film is set at an older date. The clothing the actors are wearing are also a classy eighties style. This connotes that the characters have money as they are also wearing pearl jewellery which in those days will have been more expensive and only available to the upper class.

Walking on sunshineThe first scene is a beach. The beach connotes summer, fun and a holiday romance. This suggests to the audience that the start of this move is based on a holiday romance. In the corner there is a mark where the water has been. Later, we see the water wash the foot prints in the sand away. This connotes to us that this romance isn’t permanent and that when the holiday is over it will disappear – ‘be washed away’.

The titles are white. This connotes innocence and purity which is a reflection on the female protagonist. She is presented as young with blonde hair and wearing flowery clothes. The wind is blowing her hair and the sunlight is reflecting off of her. This is promoting her to be ‘the girl next door’ type of protagonist.

The characters are in close proximity to each other. The legs intertwined shows romance and lust which is a reflection on the genre. It also shows the closeness of the two protagonists to the audience.

To concludeIn the two film openings I have looked at, I have learnt

that colour is very important in creating the right feeling for my opening. Pink is used to create lust and romance. Therefore in my own title sequence I will use hints of pink to give off the same emotion. Also, the character is important. If I were to have two characters in my opening I should have them in close proximity to each other to show that they are romantically involved. Costume is also important to show what type of character is being represented. Therefore in my own title sequence I will be careful when choosing costume as it can connote which class the character is from and what type of personality they have.
