Indie culture/ foundations • The indie music genre is very unique as it ties in with all music genres and can feature

similarities to all head music genres such as rock, hip hop and electronic.• The word ‘indie’ is short for independent, and was originally used to show that these

bands didn’t need big record labels as they didn’t want to be mainstream and hugely in the media.

• When small indie bands began emerging on local scenes, people took notice. A change from the international celebrities on radio and television that featured in mainstream music such as pop and hip hop.

• People relate indie music to a garage band, small bands who were formed in a spare room or a garage and they played and grew.

• Bands from the late 80’s/90’s who were seen to be rock artists at the time can now be placed in the indie category since its rise. Such as The Stone Roses and The Smiths.

• With all music genres a clothing culture shortly follows and with the indie culture it grew parts from the Mod era with some people opting with Fred Perry Polos with oversized parkas, and with other groups opting with plain clothing that wouldn’t stand out, although skinny jeans and shoes such as ‘vans and converse’ growing in the modern era.
