About ‘Indian Railways’

• Railways were first introduced to India in 1853 from Bombay to Thane.

• In 1951 the systems were nationalized as one unit

• Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways.

• It is one of the world's largest railway networks comprising 115,000 km (71,000 mi) of track over a route of 65,000 km (40,000 mi) and 7,500 stations.

• As of December 2012, it transported over 25 million passengers daily (over 9 billion on an annual basis).

• 2011, IR carried over 8,900 million passengers annually or more than 24 million passengers daily (roughly half of which were suburban passengers) and 2.8 million tons of freight daily.

• IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad,metre and narrow gauges.

Service provided

• Passenger services -:

Indian Railways operates 8,702 passenger trains and transports around Nine billion people annually across twenty-seven states and three union territories (Delhi, Pondicherry and Chandigarh). Sikkim is the only state not connected

• Sub urban rail -:

Many cities have their own dedicated suburban networks to cater to commuters. Currently, suburban networks operate in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.

• Freight -:

IR carry a huge variety of goods ranging from mineral ores, agricultural produce, petroleum, milk and vehicles. Ports and major urban areas have their own dedicated freight lines and yards.

Management

• Crew Management system:

- Crew Management System(CMS) is a unique system in which accuracy and monitoring is automatically maintained.

- The software system was rolled out in December 2007 and already installed at about 2200 data entry nodes at over 290 crew booking points.

- These are spread over entire Indian Railways.

- CMS at present has a database covering 89,000 crew members and over 30000 crew members are being booked daily through the system.

Center for Railway information system (CRIS)

• Train Management system (TMS)

- The TMS is a multi-crore computer-based information system that collects realtime information on signals, tracks, points, routes, and circuits.

- It transmits the timings of trains to controllers, who can then take decisions in realtime for diversion of trains, and other emergency train operations.

Railway Budget (2013-14)

• Planned investment of Rs 63,363 crore for 2013-14.

• 67 new express trains to be introduced; 27 passenger trains.

• Railway expect revenues to show a balance of Rs 12,506 crore in 2013-14.

• 5.2 per cent growth in passenger traffic expected in 2013-14.

• No fresh hike in passenger fares.

• Freight earning to grow by 9 per cent to Rs 93,554 crore. Railways set to enter 1 billion ton freight club of China, Russia and US.

• Prior to that he was the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee during the 2008 Karnataka State Assembly Elections.

Notable Trains

• Samjhauta Express is a train that runs between India and Pak .

• Lifeline Express is a special train popularly known as the "Hospital-on-Wheels" which provides healthcare to the rural areas.

• Vivek Express, between Dibrugarh and Kanyakumari, has the longest run in terms of distance and time on Indian Railways network. It covers 4,286 km in about 82 hours and 30 minutes.

• Double-decker AC trains have been introduced in India. The first double decker train was Pune-Mumbai Sinhagad express running between Pune and Mumbai .
