We chose to photograph our chosen location in both daytime (natural light) and night time (with artificial light and shadows present) before the day of filming. This helped us prepare for filming because originally we were planning to film at night as the shadows and darkness would add more suspense and conform to many thriller conventions. However we soon realised this would give the film an undesirable grainy affect and lessen the quality of our finished piece. We decided to film in daytime and maybe try out editing affects to create a nighttime look.

Backstory As we are only producing around the opening 2 minutes of a thriller film we decided to leave the end of the two minutes open to continuation so we didn’t complete the story. We didn’t want to draw any conclusions in the first two minutes as most films only really introduce the setting or characters in this time and there is no clear storyline. If we did draw conclusions in this time it this would be unlike other films of the genre and other films in general. It would be unbelievable for it to be a full film rather than a short film. We decided that we should introduce three “victim” characters and by the ending of the two minutes the audience is left in suspense to what happened to them; making them want to watch the rest of the film.

Originally we created a detailed storyboard on paper with approximate shot timings and camera angles. This has helped massively when planning our camera angles and basic story. It also allowed us to try out where each shot should occur. Our approximate total timings for each frame on the storyboard add to 1 and a half minutes which gives us room to make possible alterations on the day of filming and editing. After this we made an animated copy also. Bethany created this using a program on her computer. We put the individual shots onto iMovie and played around with timings, shot positioning and music. Even in the creation of the animated storyboard we realised the timings written on our physical storyboard were not correct and we altered them.

We decided we needed some focus on the actual titles in the opening two minutes. Bethany and I downloaded some online fonts and decided to experiment with them. The team decided we most liked the look of the typewriter style font. It has a slightly not level style and typewriters are connected with anonymous letters and evoke the idea of mystery.

This was our chosen font because we liked the vintage/typewriter aspect. The blurry-affect is relevant to thriller conventions such as mystery as some of the lettering is unclear.
This font has splatters that could indicate blood spilling, although this has a nice effect it is probably more relevant to the horror genre.
This font has an interesting scratchy style around the edges – however we thought it was slightly cartoon-like.
This font looks slightly like messy handwriting and could related to handwritten notes linking to the clues/mystery conventions.

After deciding on our title font, we moved on to looking at opening credit fonts. We tested both lower and upper case fonts and mixed them both to see the effect it would give. We decided on the font in the top-left corner because it looked professional and complimented our chosen title-font.

Johnny, Emile and Ronny wait on the platform of the train station. They idly chat inaudible small-talk to each other whilst they wait.
Johnny drips out the remainder of his water bottle and then drops it whilst they wait.
JohnnyI can’t wait to go to the sea-life centre
RonnyWait, we need to buy a ticket

Johnny and Ronny depart along the platform and down the stairs.
Emile waits for a good amount of time before walking down the very same stairs. As he goes to walk down the tunnel he exchanges a look of menace with Granary, who is walking in the opposite direction.
As he reaches the other end of the tunnel, Janet rounds the corner and pulls out a knife.

The antagonist, Emile Keeway, will be in all black. This is a very cliché concept in thriller films however we have used this idea as it strongly supports the thriller conventions and the antagonist will only be visible in the shadows at the end of the tunnel for a short time at the end of our two minute film. In addition to this, we have included a red herring type character in our production. This will add tension and confuse the audience which will make them more engaged. To enhance this effect we will also make the red herring, Granary Laceboot, wear all black too. The Helmut Nickel theory is so widely used and identified that the viewers will automatically think that Granary Laceboot is the antagonist whereas she is in fact just an unknowing passer by. Both protagonists, Ronny Pudding and Johnny Radical will be wearing light coloured clothes as this typically fits with the thriller conventions to reflect their personalities, similarly to how the antagonist will be wearing darker clothes.
Despite originally deciding to use a phone as our prop (for Emile to check the time with) to best suit our modern-day teenage audience, we changed our mind and decided the original plan of a watch would be better. Alfred will wear his watch on the day of filming.We are also using a water bottle for Johnny to drain careless before chucking the bottle behind him. We have prepared 2 water bottles to take, one empty and one full of water, so we are prepared in case the shot needs to be retaken.We also decided that to make out film best conform to conventions and truly thrill our audience it needed to have a stronger element of horror. We decided to use a knife as a prop for our antagonist, Janet. This is significant because it is much more menacing and frightening then other weapons as it can be slower and more painful then a gun. It is also a more subtle weapon then a gun because it is silent whereas guns are loud and obvious. This relates to our film as it is more dark and mysterious then action packed and violent.

Our filming location for our thriller film will be at Long Buckby train station. Therefore there are some safety issues that need to be addressed before we film there. Firstly there is the danger of the train tracks and people falling onto them especially if it is slippery and there are wires or leads lying around. As a result of this all of the people participating in the production have been advised to wear suitable footwear with substantial grip but it must also fit with the thriller conventions. Furthermore, non of our filming takes place next to the tracks except for one short shot to minimise the risk of anyone falling on the tracks. In addition to this the stairs leading to the platforms can be quite dangerous as they can be slippy in wet weather conditions. Therefore we have advised the cast to be safe when using the stairs. As we are filming in a public location we must also be cautious to not interfere with any member’s of the public or bother them. We will be using a knife in one of our shots which means we need to bring it in a protective case and only take it out for the shot. We need to ensure the cast and crew is sensible when handling the knife and we put it away when it isn’t in use.
