Register refers to the particular way of writing that belongs to a particular occasion

or an activity.

The register may depend on the audience – who we are writing to; the purpose for which we are writing – why we are writing and the topic – what it is that we are writing about.

It is important that students understand the register appropriate for a specific piece of

writing.

This may refer to a formal or informal context which can be appropriately divided into: casual, informal, formal and frozen.
