Image Analysis SoundDull image colouring suggests this is a memory, or an old video by the grainy texture. The focus on the young girl insinuates she is a main character, or a loved one of the main character. The image of the horse is also a re-occurring image throughout.

The music to the opening scene is very eerie- asynchronous to the image of a celebration. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable but intrigued.

Dull colour of the birthday suggests the emotion here that the person who is memorising back to this is feeling. Number five initialises her age, and that this is in the past. White cake colouring suggests innocence.

The echoing voices in the background create an eerie feeling and exaggerates that this is a distant memory.

This image shows happiness and makes the audience feel curious at to why this music is matched with such a happy memory. The colours used are still dull and grainy and project a dreamy interpretation.

The uncomfortable feel of the music, teamed with the high pitched echoing voices in the background creates a mysterious feeling. The sudden crescendo as the non-diegetic sound distorts and stops insinuates the dream is ending.

The denotation of the dark room conotates a mysterious surrounding only lit from backlight of the moon. The highlighting of the food, suggests he is a lonely man, living on his own, single. The colour is cold darkness, creating a suppressive mood.

The non-diegetic sound of the music creates a sense of the un-known and sets up the genre.

The hypocritical image of a karaoke advert, contrasts with the dark and shady setting. We pair karaoke with happy surroundings, whereas this man seems exhausted and depressed. This is also teamed with the previous images of birthdays and suggests this could be a possible present, setting up the next scene.

The non-diegetic sound stops here so we can just hear the diegetic sound, in order to concentrate and evaluate what these props mean.

The written codes suggest that this is a modern film, along with the home setting. The word ‘TAKEN’ insinuates the young girl who has been the centre of the opening will be taken.

The complete silence when this shot is shown, engages with the audience to challenge them to use their own emotions, and relate to the character. It also enables the viewer full concentration onto this image.
