The Municipal Corporation (MCJ) of Jalandhar is all set to give a facelift to the BSF chowk soon. As the intersection is the first to be seen while entering the city both from the Delhi and Amritsar side, it is also known as the “gateway of the city”. The project was inaugurated by BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia and Mayor Sunil Jyoti in the presence of prominent BJP leaders and BSF officials on Monday. The civic body is expected to complete the project within three months’ time and plans to dedicate it to the city on this Independence Day. Talking about the project, Mayor Sunil Jyoti said the chowk would be given a facelift at an estimated cost of Rs 42 lakh. “While we will be installing the National Flag at PAP Chowk situated on National Highway No. 1A, we have decided to install the Tricolor neon lights fitted in a steel frame that would sparkle at night. Also, we will have sparkling steel rods installed across the curvature that too will glow with the reflections of the vehicular lights,” said Jyoti. He also added that the chowk with BSF carved over it will be dedicated to the grit, valour and sports achievement of the border sentinels having its headquarters in the city. He said while the MCJ would be constructing the chowk presently, the BSF would be maintaining it thereafter. Though the project was initially part of the Smart City vision, the civic body had now decided to execute it on its own after it failed to figure in the smart city list. Also, the MC has planned various other projects like the development of the cycling track around the Bist Doab canal flowing through the city.

NEW BOOK ON ARCHITECTURE PUBLISHED August 16,

"MODERN REGIONALISM: The architecture of Sarbjit Bahga" is a monograph on the selected works of Indian architect Sarbjit Bahga. He has more than three-and-a-half decades of practical experience in designing of various types of buildings, complexes and large campuses. His completed works include an eclectic and impressive range of administrative, recreational, educational, medical, residential, commercial and agricultural buildings. His building designs are innovative and responsive to function, climate and materials. He is a staunch modernist and an ardent, yet not blind, admirer of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Louis Kahn. He

is three-time recipient of the World Architecture Community Awards. His name has been featured in the Guinness Book of World Records for designing the “longest covered concrete corridor” in Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health, Amritsar. Bahga is also a keen researcher, and a prolific architectural writer. He has eight books to his credit. His books are considered as landmarks in the history of contemporary architecture in India.

The main focus of this book is to present a few selected works of the architect which portray his prolific approach to the designs of the diverse range of building types. Of more than 200 projects he has designed, only 54 have been included in this treatise. These projects have been subdivided into seven categories i.e., Office Buildings, Recreational Buildings, Educational Buildings, Healthcare Buildings, Residential Buildings, Public Infrastructure, and Agricultural Buildings.

The book is authored by Supreet Singh Bahga, a Doctorate from Stanford University, USA, and Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.

Christopher Charles Benninger, a renowned American-Indian architect/planner, and allumnus of MIT, and Harvard University, USA, has written the foreword essay, "In Search of an Indian Architecture: Modern Regionalism."
