Capacity built

1. Simulation of natural heat stress in climate chamber: Conducting heat stress

experiment in livestock in controlled condition in the chamber

2. Modeling of Greenhouse Gas emissions in dairy farms: Integrated farm system

model (Dairy GHG model) was used to predict the GHG emission from the dairy farm.

3. In vitro gas analysis based on bioreactor model: It offers scope for testing the

feed samples for methane emission properties.

4. Individual Animal GHG estimation based on respiratory chamber model:This technique offers scope for accurate estimation of the GHG emissions from individual

animals both from enteric fermentation process as well from manure.

5. Forage and flax seed impact on enteric methane emission in dairy cows

Provides scope for formulation of methane reduction strategies based on nutritional

manipulation and strategic supplementation

Establishing a laboratory at NIANP for studying the

impact of climate change on livestock production

•Climate chamber for small ruminants


Research projects in the area of training at CSWRI

Associated with four projects in the trained area

1. As PI of the Project entitled “Studies on multiple stresses on

reproduction and production of sheep”

2. CC-PI of the NFBSFARA Project on “Deciphering the mechanisms of

aberrant maternal recognition of pregnancy in sheep and buffalo under

thermal and nutritional stress”.

3. Co-PI of NICRA project on “Assessing the resiliance of small ruminant

production under changing climatic condition in semi-arid zone”.

4. Co-PI of ICAR Network Project on “Adaptation and Facilitation of livestock

to impending climatic changes through shelter management”.

All these projects are aimed at improving the sheep production and reproduction

under changing climatic scenario.

1. Impact of heat and salt stress on sheep: Unraveling the molecular and cellular

mechanisms of stress response - Indo-Tunisia Collaborative Project (DBT)

2. Impact and Identification of molecular and cellular markers for abiotic (heat

and Nutrition) stress in goats (Proposed under NICRA)

Linkage and Network Developed

Serving as expert committee member for climate change research entitled

“Plans to develop climate change and associated sciences for the benefit of the

Kerala state for the coming decades”

The Implementing Officer Dr.Girish Varma was trainined by me in my NAIP

Training

Under the expert committee guidance “Centre for Animal adaptation to

Environment and Climate Change Studies (CAADECC)” was established at

KVASU, Mannuthy, Thrissur, Kerala

Jointly proposed a project to DBT on “Bio-prospecting and cataloging of novel

and differentially expressed genes under heat stress conditions in native cattle

of Kerala”



Project Title: Adaptation Strategies to sustain livestock production under the

changing climate scenario in semi-arid tropical environment”

For consideration of funding under Collaborative Adaptation Research

Initiatives in Africa and Asia (CARIAA), CANADA

The consortium consists of five institutes three from India and two from Nigeria

1. National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIANP)

2. Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI)

3. Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI)

4. Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB)

5. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)

International Collaborative Research Initiative

However, the project was not through. Hence attempts are being made to

submit the same for other international funding
