IntroductionThishandbookdescribestheworkingsofthecommunityofstudentsandteamscallediCommunitywithintheIllinoisFoundryforInnovationinEngineeringEducation(iFoundry)attheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana‐Champaign.iFoundrywasconceivedasacollaborativeincubatorforthetransformationofengineeringeducationinalignmentwiththepaceanddegreeoftechnologicalinnovationandcreativityofthe21stcentury.iCommunitywasconceivedasawaytoencourageteamworkandcollaborationamongstudentsfromtheveryfirstmomentsoftheirengineeringeducationinawaythatpromotesgreaterengagement,involvement,andresponsibilityforpositiveeducationaloutcomes.

BriefHistoryofiFoundryandICommunityAnactivityin2006‐2007calledEngineeringandTechnologyStudiesatIllinois(ETSI,www‐illigal.ge.uiuc.edu/ETSI)sponsoredaseminarseriesinvolvingengineersandnon‐engineersaliketoconsiderengineeringandtechnologyashumanactivities.InFall2007,ETSIsponsoredaWorkshopontheEngineeroftheFutureattheUniversityofIllinoisinwhichBillWulf,outgoingpresidentoftheNationalAcademyofEngineeringandIllinoisalumnus,andSherraKerns,FoundingVPforinnovationatOlinCollegegavekeynotetalks.ThatworkshopwasinstrumentaltorenewingtheconversationonengineeringeducationreformatIllinois.

Earlierthatsummer,awhitepaper(availableonwww.ifoundry.illinois.edu)hadbeenwrittenproposinganinterdepartmentalcollaborativeincubatorcalledtheIllinoisFoundryforTechVisionandLeadership(iFoundry).Representativesfromfivedepartments(AE,CEE,ECE,IESE,andMatSE)andothersmettodesignvariousaspectsoftheincubator.AsubcommitteeoftheCollegeExecutiveCommitteeheadedbyDougBeckwasappointedbyDeanAdesidathatfalltostudythepossibilityofanincubatorandinFall2008,iFoundrywasestablishedasacollegeactivity.

StudentswereinvolvediniFoundrydeliberationsfromthebeginning.StudentleadersmetwiththedepartmentalrepresentativesontheiFoundryadhoccommitteestartinginsummer2007,andacoursecalledDesigningtheEngineeringCurriculumoftheFuturewasheldintheSpringof2008with18students,roughly2/3undergraduateand1/3graduatestudents,participating.StudentshavebeeninvolvedindesigndiscussionsthroughoutandEngineeringLearningAssistantsandotherstudentadvisorsandmentorsareimportanttothefunctioningoftheiFoundryplan.

ThefirstiCommunityintheinauguraliFoundryclassstartedinFall2009,butmanyoftheideasandpracticescontainedhereinweretestedinthelate90’saspartoftheTeamworkforaQualityEducation(TQE)atUIUC.Thoseexperimentsweresuccessfulinimprovingstudentengagementthoughateamworkexperience,butthepilotwasnotintegratedintotheregularstudentexperienceatthattime.Thedesign

ofiCommunityhasbeeninfluencedbythoseexperiencestogetherwiththegrowingliteratureonlearningcommunities.

OrganizationofthisHandbookThishandbookconsiderstheneedforiFoundryandiCommunity,thestructureofiCommunityandtheiTeams,thefunctionsoftheiTeams,andthefourteamscreatedinalignmentwithstudentaspirations.ThehandbookcontinuesbydiscussingiTeammeetings,iCommunitycheckpointsandothergatherings,theformsofrecognitionavailableforiStudentsandiTeams,themodesofcommunicationforiCommunitymembers,andthebudgetavailablefortheseactivities.

TheNeedforiFoundryandiCommunityThe21stcenturyisafast‐pacedtimecharacterizedbyrapidtechnologicaladvanceandglobalconnectedness.ThissectionconsiderstheneedforiFoundryandiCommunityinsuchanenvironment.

iFoundry:ChangingMinds&ChangingOrganizationsThereformofengineeringeducationhasbeenahottopicforthebetterpartoftwodecades.Theneedforreformisdrivenbychangesinindustrialorganizationandthepracticeofengineering,butdespitemucheffortandmoneyexpended,theamountofeffectiveeducationalchangeisquitemodest.Thereasonsforthisarebecomingincreasinglyclear.Manyreformeffortsbeginwith“theplan,”alistoftopicsorcoursesthatneedtobeinsertedintothecurriculum.“Theplan”runsintotwoproblems.

First,collegesoperatingunderatraditionalcurriculumarereluctanttoentertaintopicsthatare“notrigorous.”Yet,manyofthetopicsthatarethoughttobemostnecessaryinpracticearethe“soft”design,communications,andpeopleskillsnecessarytobeeffectiveinamodernworkenvironment.

Second,evenwhensomeagreementcanbereachedontheneedforchange,theorganizationfindsitselfunabletomakechange,becausetheprocessesofcurriculumvotingaredeadlockedbyakindofacademicNIMBY(“notinmybackyard”)problem.Thepoliticaldeadlockresultsinminimalagreementforchange,andverylittlereformtakesplace.

Thus,thejobofeducationalreformisnotamatterofcreatingyetanotherplanorlistoftopics.Insteaditisamatterofchangingmindsandchangingorganizationsthroughacombinationofconceptualclarificationandthecreationoflociofexperimentation.Inengineeringandindustrialpractice,itiscommonplacetocreatepilotplantsandR&Dfacilitiestoplanandtestnewproductsandprocesses,andiFoundrytakesapageoutofindustry’splaybookincreatinganincubator,pilotplant,orR&Dfacilityforeducationalinnovationandtesting.ThoseinterestedinunderstandingtheintellectualbasisanddesignoftheiFoundrymechanismcanreviewliteratureontheiFoundrywebsite(www.ifoundry.illinois.edu),theiFoundry

iCommunity:ConnectingforaSuccessfulTransitionfromHighSchooltoCollegeEngineeringisachallengingcourseofstudyandmanystudentsleaveforotherfieldsofstudybeforeknowingwhetherengineeringisagoodfitforthemornot.Engineeringstudentattritionisacomplexphenomenon,butakeyvariableinalmostallsuccessfultransitionsfromhighschooltocollege(andfromcollegetotheworkforce)issocialconnectedness.AkeyideabehindiFoundryandiCommunityisthatacommunityofstudentsworkingtogethercanincreasethesuccesspotentialofitsmembersandhelpstudentsstayinengineeringlongenoughtodeterminewhetheritisagoodfitforthemornot.

Also,theUniversityofIllinoishasrichengineeringstudentlifeopportunitiesasexemplifiedbymanyandvariedengineeringstudentorganizationsoncampus.Althoughmanyengineeringstudentsengagewiththoseactivitiesintheirjuniorandsenioryears,iCommunityprovidesabridgetothatrichandvariedengineeringstudentlifeforstudentsintheearlypartoftheirengineeringeducation.

TheStructureofiCommunity&iTeamsThissectionconsiderstheoverallorganizationoftheiCommunity,theiTeamselectionprocess,theorganizationofindividualiTeams,thesupportavailabletoiTeams,andtheiCouncil.Intheremainderofthesection,eachoftheseisdiscussedinturn.

iCommunityOrganizationTheiCommunityconsistsofallstudentswhoarepartofiFoundry(iStudents).Inaddition,theiCommunityissupportedbyavarietyofadvisors,mentors,sponsors,andiFoundryfacultyandstaffmembers(iFriends).iCommunityissubdividedintoteamsofroughly15‐25studentscallediTeams.LeadersofeachoftheiTeamsformaniCouncil(tobediscussedbelow).

iTeamSelectionProcessEarlyinthefreshmenyear,studentsarepresentedwithalistofavailableteams,andthestudentsareaskedtoranktheirpreferencesforiTeammembership.Everyeffortismadetoassignstudentstoteamsaccordingtotheirtoppreferences.AftertheinitialiTeamselectionprocess,aniStudentcanchangeteamswiththeagreementoftheiChairsofthetwoiTeamsinvolvedandtheAssociateDirectorofiFoundry.Teamchangesarefrozenfollowingthethirdfullweekofthesemester.

iTeamOrganizationAtthebeginningofeachsemester,eachiTeamelectsachaircalledaniChairbymajorityvotefromamongallthemembersoftheiTeam.Ifamajorityvoteisnotobtainedonthefirstballot,thetop‐twovotegettersareconsideredinarunoff

election,andthewinnerbecomestheiChair.EachiChairisresponsiblefororganizingtheiTeamintomanageablesubteams.

iTeamSupportEachiTeamhasasetofadvisorsasfollows:

iTeamStudentAdvisor(iSA).iSAsareundergraduateorgraduatestudentswhoworkforiFoundrytocoordinateiCommunityandiTeamactivities.EachteamisassignedtwoiSAs,andiSAsarethego‐tosourceofadviceandcoachingregardingleadershipandteamworkmatters,iFoundryandiCommunityworkings,andinformaladvicefornavigatingcampusandacademics.

iTeamFacultyAdvisor(iFA).iFAsarefacultymemberschosenbecauseoftheiralignmentwiththethematicsubjectmatterofaagiveniTeam.AlloftheiFAsareiFoundryFellows,andmanyofthemhavebeeninvolvedwithiFoundryactivitiesfromearlyinthedesignprocess.iFAshelpcoordinateactivitieswiththecorporate/organizationalsponsorsandwillbeespeciallyhelpfulintheearlyprocessofgettingtheiTeamsorganized.

iTeamCorporate/OrganizationalAdvisor(iCOA).CorporateandorganizationalsponsorshaveagreedtoworkwithiFoundrytohelpbringtheworldofworkfromoutsideintotheuniversity.TheiCOAsmeetwithiTeamsonroughlyamonthlybasis(oftenbyteleconference),andtheywillhelpcoordinatemeetingswithcorporate/organizationalrepresentativeswithiTeamswhencorporatemembersareoncampus.

Inadditiontotheteam‐specificadvisorsasdescribedabove,iTeamscanseeksupportfromthefollowingindividuals:

iFoundrycoreteam.MembersoftheiFoundrycoreteamareavailabletosupportiCommunityandiTeams,includingCo‐directorsDaveGoldberg&RayPrice,AssociateDirectorKarenHyman,iCommunitycoordinatorRussKorte,ENG100++CoordinatorPeteDragic,andiFoundryAdmin,TraceyJohnson.

iFoundryfellows.AnumberoffacultyhavehelpediFoundryintellectually,organizationally,andinothermanners.ThesepeoplearecallediFoundryfellows,andmanyofthemarehappytoassistiTeams,especiallyintopicsrelatedtotheirdisciplinaryexpertise.AlistingofiFoundryfellowsmaybefoundontheiFoundrywebsiteatwww.ifoundry.illinois.edu.

iFoundryCouncilrepresentatives.EachdepartmenthasarepresentativetotheiFoundryCouncil,andtheseindividualsmaybehelpfultotheactivitiesoftheiTeams.

iCouncilAlloftheiChairsconstitutetheiCommunityCounciloriCouncil,andachairoftheiCounciliselectedbymajorityvotefromamongtheiChairs.TheiCouncilisresponsibleforcoordinatingiCommunityactivitiesinawaythatsocial,learning,

andWOWactivitiesarewidelysharedamongiTeamstotheextentpossible.TheiCounciliChairmayappointinter‐iTeamcommitteesorteamstohelppromotecollaborationandcoordinationamongtheiTeams.

iTeamFunctionsTheiTeamservesanumberoffunctionstohelpfacilitatesuccessfultransitionfromhighschooltoengineeringcollege.Inparticular,iTeamsprovide

• asenseofidentityandsocialinteraction;• academicsupportandiFoundryadvising;• introductiontotheworldofwork;• alocusforserviceactivities.

Eachoftheseisbrieflydiscussedinturn.

IdentityandSocialInteractionEachiTeamprovidesasenseofbelongingandidentitytoitsmembersinthesamewaythatafraternityorsororityorsocialclubmight,exceptthatitisuptotheiTeamtocreateitsownidentityandsocialactivities.Opportunitiesforexcellence.iTeamscanappointidentityand/orsocialchairs,createiTeamnames,logos,orotheridentifyingmarks,usesocialmedia(Facebook,Linkedin,etc.)ordigitalmedia(YouTube,SlideShare,etc.),holdsocialgatherings(withorwithoutotheriTeamsorcampusgroups),andpurchaseiTeamapparel(t‐shirts,hats,etc.).

AcademicSupportandiFoundryAdvisingiStudentsaremembersoftheirhomedepartmentsandiFoundry.Assuch,theprimaryresponsibilityforacademicsupportandadviceiswiththehomedepartment;however,iTeamsareanimportantsourceofinformalacademicsupportandadvice.iSAscanprovideinformationtostudentsbasedontheirownexperienceasstudents,andIFAsandiSAscanprovideiFoundry‐specificadviceaboutiFoundryofferings,HAPIthemes,andnewiFoundry‐relatedcourses.Inaddition,iTeamscanorganizetohelptheirmembers“survive”thechallengesofthefreshmenyear.Opportunitiesforexcellence.iTeamscanappointacademicchairs,formstudytable/groups(generallyorbyclass),formtutoringteams(fromthoseexperiencedinadvancedsubjectmatterbyAPtest),linktoexternaltutoringorstudyhelp,collectstudymaterials,andformsystemstomonitoracademicsuccess.

WorldofWorkAkeytomotivatingiStudentsistomakesuretheyunderstandthewayopportunitiesintheworldofworkalignwiththeirinterests.EachiTeamispairedwithoneormorecorporations/organizationsandoneormoreiCOArepresentatives.Opportunitiesforexcellence.iTeamscanappointworld‐of‐work(WOW)chairstocoordinatewithiCOAs,theEngineeringCareerServicesoffice,andotherwork‐relatedagencies.iTeamscanarrangefieldtrips,talksbycompanyrepresentatives,andvisitstoEngineeringExpoandothercampusplacement

activities.iTeamscanrecordshortvideosofcampusvisitorsonwork‐relatedtopicsofinteresttoiStudentsandotherengineeringstudents.

ServiceJustasmanyfraternities,sororities,andsocialorganizationsperformserviceactivitiesintheircommunities,iTeamscanchoosetoperformservicetocampusentities,thecommunity,andbeyond.Opportunitiesforexcellence.iTeamscanappointservicechairstoorganizeandmonitorserviceactivities,andorganizegroupsofiTeammemberstoparticipateinserviceactivitiestothecampus,thelargercommunity,charities,orreligiousgroups,ororganizationssuchasEngineerswithoutBorders.

Fall2009:FouriTeamsAlignedwithStudentAspirationsInsurveyingaspirationsoftheincomingiFoundryclass,studentinterestswereclassifiedintothreebroadcategories.First,therewerestudentswhoweremotivatedtocometoengineeringschooltodesigncooltechnology.Second,therewerestudentswhowantedtobethenext“MaxLevchin”bybeingpartoforfoundingantechentrepreneurialfirm.Finally,therewerestudentswhowantedtomakeadifferencefairlydirectlyintheworldbyworkingonthedifficultsocial/environmentalproblemssuchassustainabilityorworldpoverty.

FourteamswerecreatedinalignmentwithiStudentaspirations:

Art&EngineeringDesign(AED).AEDisconcernedwiththeintersectionofartandhuman‐centeredengineeringdesignaswellastraditionalareasofproductdesign.iFAs:JimLeake(IESE)&DavidWeightman(IndustrialDesign).iCOAs:KeithBesserud(Skidmore,Owings,andMerrill),GeraldLabedz(Motorola),MartinNeumann,CenterforPlasma‐MaterialInteractions.RecommendedforiStudentsinterestedinintersectionofartandengineering,structuralengineers(SOMisarchitecture/engineeringfirm),engineersinterestedinproductdesignacrossdisciplines.

Service&SystemsEngineering(SSE).SSEisconcernedwiththeincreasingroleoftechnology‐basedhuman‐centeredservicesandsystemsasasourceofinnovationandengineeringwork.iFAs:RayPrice.iCOAs:DianeFodell(IBM,SSME)andJohnQuarton,AmyMast,&RussSmith(StateFarm).RecommendedforiStudentsinterestedinITconsultingandhuman‐centeredtechnology‐intensiveservicesandsystems.

Entrepreneurship&Innovation(EI).EIisconcernedwiththeroleoftechnologyentrepreneurshipinnewenterprisesandnewproductintrapreneurshipandinnovationinexistingcorporations.iFA:LauraHollisandPeteDragic.iCOAs:RhiannonClifton(TEC)&CarlChow(HP).RecommendedforiStudentsinterestedinstartupentrepreneurship,large‐companyintrapreneurship,andbusinessinnovationandcreativity,moregenerally.

EngineeringinServicetoSociety(ESS).ESSisconcernedwithdirectactiontoapplyengineeringtoproblemsofsustainability,poverty,andsocietalimprovement.iFA:BruceLitchfield.iCOAs:KeithBesserud(SOM,sustainablearchitecture),BruceLitchfield(EngineersWithoutBorders)&DianeFodell(IBM,SmarterPlanet).RecommendedforiStudentsinterestedindirectlyapplyingtheirengineeringskilltoproblemsofsustainability,theenvironment,orsocietalimprovement.

ThesediverseiTeamsprovideavarietyofemphasestoaccommodatetheinterestsoftheiStudentclass.

iTeamMeetingsandiCommunityCheckpoints&GatheringsiTeamsmeetforthefirstmonthofthesemesteronalmostaweeklybasisto(1)electiChairs,(2)getorganized,and(3)prepareforiCheckpointandiExpomeetingsatmidtermandtheendofthesemester,respectively.Dates,times,andmeetingplacesforearlymeetingsarepredetermined,butthereafter,iTeamsmeetatafrequencydeterminedbytheiChairandotherteamleaders.

iCheckpointTheiCheckpointmeetingisheldatmidterm,andiTeamspresent(1)anoverallplanofiTeamorganizationandactivities,and(2)plansandprogressineachofthefunctionaliTeamareas(identity/social,academics/advising,worldofwork,andservice).

iExpoTheiExpomeetingisheldatsemesterend,andiTeamsmakefinalpresentationsineachoftheiCheckpointareas.iCOAs,iFAs,departmentalfaculty,andothersareencouragedtoattendiExpo.

OtheriCommunityGatheringsiCommunitygatheringscanbescheduledforsocial,intellectual,ororganizationalpurposesasneeded.ThesegatheringsmaybeinitiatedbyiFoundrystaff,theiCouncil,orboth.

AnumberoftheiCheckpointandiExpoactivitiesaregivenspecialrecognitionasdescribedinthenextsection.

RecognitioniCommunityandtheiTeamsformasupportmechanismtohelpiStudentsgetthroughthetransitionfromhighschooltotheUniversity,intellectuallyandsocially,inamannerthatintroducestheworldofworkandofbroaderservice.TheseareintrinsicallyimportantfunctionsandtheirimportanceprovidesstrongmotivationfortheiTeamstodotheirjobs.Itis,however,helpfulinhumanaffairstorecognize

bothteamandindividualexcellenceasawaytoencouragetheaccomplishmentofprimarytasks.

ThissectionoutlinestheformsofiTeam,iCheckpoint/iExpo,iCommunityrecognition.

iTeamRecognitioniChairsmaydevisemeansofrecognizingindividualandgroupaccomplishmentwithintheiriTeams.Opportunitiesforexcellence.Selectarecognitionchair.Recognizeweeklyexcellenceoverallorinfunctionalcategories,asindividualsorasgroups.Postbios,pictures,orvideosofthoserecognizedoniTeamFacebookpageorblogs.Giveribbons,trophies,medals,t‐shirts,books,orothertangibleawardsinconnectionwithsomerecognition.

iCheckpointRecognitionPresentationsatthemidtermiCheckpointmeetingsareevaluatedbyallaudiencemembersandjudgedbyapanelofiFriends.First‐andsecond‐placeawardsaregiventothetoptwopresentationsineachcategory.Theweightingofpresentationqualityandcontentwillberoughly50‐50indeterminingtheseawards.Formofrecognition:iFoundrywebpagelisting,certificatestotherecognizediTeamandallmembersofthepresentationteam,andotherrecognitionasdeterminedbytheiCouncil.

iExpoRecognitionPresentationsattheend‐of‐semesteriExpomeetingsareevaluatedbyallaudiencemembersandjudgedbyapanelofiFriends.First‐andsecond‐placeawardsaregiventothetoptwopresentationsineachcategory.Theweightingofpresentationqualityandcontentisroughly50‐50indeterminingtheseawards.Formofrecognition:iFoundrywebpagelisting,certificatestotherecognizediTeamandallmembersofthepresentationteam,andotherrecognitionasdeterminedbytheiCouncil.

iStarRecognitionIndividualsandgroupsofindividualsmaybenominatedforiStarrecognitionbasedontheircontributionstotheiCommunity.AnyiStudentoriFriendmaynominateanyiStudentorgroupofiStudentsforiStarrecognitionina150‐350wordemailsenttotheiFoundryAssociateDirectorpriortothenominationdeadlineattheendofeachsemester.Theemailshouldlist(1)theiStudent(s)nominated,(2)thewaysinwhichtheiStarnominee(s)aidedtheiTeam,iCommunity,iFoundry,theCollege,theCampus,orsocietyatlarge,and(3)theiCommunity/iTeamfunctionsthatwereadvancedbytheseaccomplishments.Formofrecognition:iFoundrywebpagelisting,acertificatetoalliStarawardwinners,andotherrecognitionasdeterminedbytheiCouncil.

iCommunityRecognitioniTeamsareeligibleforrecognitionineachofthefollowingways:

iGPAaward.FollowingeachsemesterteamwiseGPAiscalculatedandawardsforfirstandsecondplacearegiven.Formofrecognition:iFoundrywebpagelisting,certificatetoiTeam,andotherrecognitionasdeterminedbytheiCouncil.

iECSaward.FollowingthefirstsemestertheproportionofiTeammemberswhohaveregisteredwithEngineeringCareerServices(ECS)iscalculatedandawardsforfirstandsecondplacearegiven.Formofrecognition:iFoundrywebpagelisting,certificatetoiTeam,andotherrecognitionasdeterminedbytheiCouncil.
