Life As A Civi l & Structural Engineer

In general, a civi l and

structural engineer has to ensure and examine the structure of building so that i t remains stable and safe. They either work in of f ices or on construct ion sites. Structural engineers involve in designing structures like houses, hospitals and of f ice blocks. They also involve in report ing and making decision on f inancial

St ructural engineers are responsible

in choosing the r ight materials such as concrete, steels and bricks for the project . They consult and work along with the architect , engineers and landscape architect . In order to become a good structural engineer, one should be good in Physics and must have a strong three-dimensional conceptual skills. I t is important for them to think out of box to solve daily problems.

Here i would like to share about a

civi l engineer?s personal informat ion. His full name is Zainol Bin Zakaria. He born in the year 1964 (age 51), and had married with 6 childrens. The prof iciencies of him is English and Bahasa Melayu.

IR Zainol Bin Zakaria graduated f rom Universit i Teknologi Malaysia in 1987 with a Bachelor in Civi l Engineering. He has been in this industry for the past 28 years. He has worked as a junior engineer for 4 years and another 6 years as a senior engineer.

The projects that he had been involved in are Sg Piah Hydro Electr ic Project ,Peninsular Gas Ut i lizat ion Project Phase 2 , Klang Road Bypass , Airport Road Interchange, Kuala Lumpur Tower, Slope Repairs along Tamparuli-Ranau Highway, Sabah, KLIA (Package RA16), Bus & taxi complex and overpass at Jln Sultan Azlan Shah, Ipoh, Perak, Monorail Trial Track, Ampang Hilir High End Condominium, New Alor Setar Hospital Project , New Pekan Hospital Project , Petronas Rantau Mall, Kerteh, Terengganu ,Proposed New Gumusut Cutt ing And Assembly Workshop, The Design, Construct ion, Equipping, Commissioning and Maintenance of Shah Alam Hospital, The Construct ion of Business Bay Hotel, Dubai, UAE, Women and Children Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Lawas Hospital, Sarawak, MRT S3 stat ions - The Curve, TDDI and One Utama, Projek Menara Kembar Bank Rakyat, Kuala Lumpur.

Past Project :

The durat ion of h is involvem ent in

the project was roughly about a year and a hal f, star t ing fr om January 1992 unt i l June 1993. This puts h im in the center posi t ion as the tower was constructed in 1991 and com pleted in 1994. This gives h im a contract value of RM 270 m i l l ion. In th is project, M r Zainol was responsible for tak ing off, standing supervision and the preparat ion of Bar Bending Schedule BBS.

The ongoing project

M r. Zainol is involved in as a project dir ector is the new W om en and Chi ldren?s H ospital that is located with in the proxim ity of the exist ing H ospital Kuala Lum pur in Jalan Pahang.

The W om en & Chi ldren?s H ospital

is an RM 848m il project signed between the M in istr y of H eal th, and UEM Construct ion Sdn Bhd with i ts join t venture com pany, Najcom Sdn Bhd and is expected for com plet ion by the end of 2016. I t is a 12 storey bui lding which wi l l hold 600 beds where i t has a total gross f loor area of 1,890,143 sq. ft .

the hospi tal include therapy services, crèche or nursery, labour and del ivery, special ist cl in ics, chi ld developm ent centre, paediatr ic special ist cl in ics, wom en heal th centre, neonatal In tensive Care Units, obstetr ic wards, Em ergency Depar tm ent, cafeter ia, shops for publ ic convenience and a 20-room hotel . A m ul t i -level car park which wi l l provide an addi t ion of about 1000 m ore park ing bays wi l l also be bui l t to ease tr aff ic congest ion with in the hospi tal com pound. The hospi tal project is a par t of the Kuala Lum pur Structure Plan 2020 by the governm ent to upgrade general hospi tals to provide better m edical services to the people. 

I n th is project, M r Zainol r epor ts to

m anaging dir ector of UEM Bui lders BH D. H e also leads the hospi tal design and construct ion team to car r y out the pr icing as wel l as reviewing the cost ings pr ior presenting to the m anaging dir ector and subm itt ing them to the cl ients. Other than that, he also coordinates am ong the consul tants, covers both technical contractual and f inancial aspects. Last ly, he is r esponsible fr om the pre contract stage to the f inal accounts.

as a pr ofessi on ? ?For me, it?s just a coincident. I do not know what civil engineer ing at that time and dur ing the interview, I just said to the interviewer that civil engineer sounds good. So, i only realise what is c&s engineer ing upon my enrolment to the university. "

?The r ight attitude,technical knowledge teamwork and most impor tantly it comes with responsibility and liability."

W hat i s you r gr eatest ach i evem en t??W hen I was the project manager for the slope remedial works along Tamparuli-Ranau project, we completed the project in average of 30 days ahead schedule for all the 4 packages awarded to us. Also, we made quite a big profit margins."

?Each project has it?s own unique challenges. I t?s different from one project to another such as civil works, structural works, mar ine works, slope protection works or even towers."

?You must put a very high interest and effor t to manage and execute any assignments given. W orking in the silo is extremely prohibited as communication is the main tool to cascade and escalate the information."
