Urban planning

• Canal ring - the answer to overpopulation caused by the Dutch Golden Age – XVIIth century

• Defensive, menagerial and transportational functions of the canals

• Social segragation – dividing the city into rich and poor areas

• XXth century – modernist socialist ideas, new districts on outskirts with housing blocks

• XXIst century – back to the water – new islands inhabited

Urban planning

• No wide roads possible

• 1960 – bicycle policy

• No cars allowed

• 450 km bicycle paths

Transportation

• 85% city residents using their bike at least once a week

• 38 % of all daily journeys are by bicycle (mostly under 5km)

• About 1mln bicycles in the town

• 100 thousand being stolen each year

• Walkability and bike usage have lenghten the life expectancy

• Good, diverse public transport

• provides for 100% of the Dutch capital's water needs;

• the building holds open plan offices, a restaurant, a congress hall and a café;

• a part of World Waternet, which works with local water organizations towards structural solutions for several eco-problems.

- wasting water;

- producing drinking water;

- supplying inhabitants with tap water;

- taking care of the discharge of waste water;

- keeping the surface water clean.
