‘How to motivate students’
by Pınar Boynikoglu
• Motivating students is a challenge that almost all
teachers face.• Students need to be
motivated in order to focus on the task they will
accomplish. • How can we motivate
students?
• First of all, we should attract their attention on
what we are teaching, using humor, jokes and
engaging questions which get the students talking.
• We should make learning visual using drawings,
diagrams, pictures, charts, even three-dimensional or
real objects to help students anchor the idea
to an image.
• The feeling of satisfaction, confidence and success has an important effect on motivation,
as well. We should provide activities that allow students
accomplish certain tasks and feel that they can do. We can
accelerate this by giving positive feedback and praises like “Good job! or Well Done!”.
• When we use positive emotions to enhance learning
and motivation including something fun, exciting,
happy, or perhaps even a bit frightening, students will
learn and remember better.
• students will be much more motivated and
committed to a learning activity which meets their
needs.
• They need fun, they need a bit freedom. By the way, we should allow students participate in the lesson actively and relate the
content to their experiences in real life.
• Remember that, the more motivated students get, the more successful they will be and the longer the learning process will last.
