DESCRIPTION

How to Go Off the Grid (Digitally) – July 17, 2013 http://www.meetup.com/TechLife-Cincinnati/events/120822742/ BDPA hosts ‘Cincinnati Blacks In Technology’ to collaborate with the vibrant community of like-minded technology professionals of color in our city. The doors are wide open for those folks who passionate about all things technical. Our meetups encourage fun, socializing and high level talks on a variety of technology topics. IT recruiters and IT job seekers are both welcome! We are more and more connected digitally every day. Our information is constantly being shared, monitored, sold and stolen. As our lives move more into the digital world it is important to know the risks and protect your privacy. With social networks, smart phones and the ever encroaching homeland security it is important to understand what is happening to your data and how to continue to stay connected without compromising privacy. This talk not only explains the risks but will teach you how to stay connected to friends and family in a manner that protects your privacy. Our speaker demonstrates the concepts of "DarkNets", underground private networks. It will show you not only how to use the internet privately but also stay connected, share files, IM privately and even buy goods. All while protecting your identity from 3rd party servers or prying eyes. Our guest speaker is Craig Smith. He is both the chief executive officer of Theia Labs and the co-founder of Hive13. His company engages in technology research, specializing in reverse engineering of software and hardware protections, mobile devices and augmented reality research. Craig develops new and innovative tools and technologies for corporations and he has clearance for government research. Hive13 is a Cincinnati-based non-profit collaboration environment with 3,500 square feet of work space, 3d printers, laser cutters, wood and metal working equipment and networking/meeting space. Hive13 is a great place to work out new ideas and rapid prototype inventions.
