Teddy Roosevelt
Was born to a wealthy family in New York He had no interest in increasing his wealth -- in fact he worked to try and break up the monopolies and trusts of the super-wealthy of the time period
Teddy Roosevelt becomes governor of New York He was a hero of the Spanish American War He used that popularity to become governor of NewYork Once governor he worked to reduce the influence of monopolies and
trusts
The Republican Party nominated him for Vice President in 1900 At that time, being Vice President tended end political careers The Republican Party nominated him for Vice President to stop him from
going after monopolies and trusts
Teddy Roosevelt becomes President in 1901 William McKinley was assassinated early into his second term Roosevelt becomes a Progressive President who goes after monopolies
and stands up for the regular people of America
Roosevelt also promotes American Imperialism He believes in “big stick” diplomacy -- it’s basically using force to make sure America gets its way He sent the American Navy on a world wide tour to show it’s power He supported a Panamanian Revolution in Colombia so America could build the Panama Canal He had the US government interfere in Latin America to promote
American interests.
Essentially Roosevelt was a Progressive President for America
But he was an imperialist President from the standpoint of the rest of the world
