HOW STUDIO MAGAZINE

REPRESENTS SOCIAL GROUPS

Jamie Dudley

Representation of YouthsThe artist that I have created is a 19 year old and young people around this age group are usually stereotyped as being lazy and a bad part of society. My artist represents this social group more positively through what he is wearing. He is wearing a suit and tie which many people would describe as being smart and a sign of wealth and professionalism. This represents young people as being professional and hard working.

Representation of Lower ClassIn the article about the artist it describes his upbringing and life. It describes his life in Brixton, a lower class London district, where many people are in poverty and have very little money. The common view of lower class people is that they are unskilled and that they do not contribute a lot to society. The represents the lower class both positively and negatively. In the article he says that Brixton is ‘a rough place to live’ and also says that violence, crime and drugs is an issue. Brixton is a made up of mostly lower class people so this gives them a poor representation. On the other hand in the article my artist says that Brixton had a great atmosphere and that it shaped who he is today and he sees this as a positive thing representing the lower class and the population of Brixton positively.

Representation of Young People and their Education

Slang is often associated with young people and a lack of literacy skills. In my artist’s article he uses some slang such as ‘sick’ and ‘ting’. This could be interpreted as being a microcosm of young people showing that they do not speak properly and are under educated thus representing young people poorly. On the other hand my artist’s ideologies are very different to what many people consider young people’s ideologies to be. My artist wants to be a good role model and to inspire other people who may be in the same situation he was in. So this represents young people well as they want to have a positive influence and impact.

Representation of Youth CultureIn the strap line I have used a graffiti like font and I have used it to appeal to a younger audience as it represents urban culture. The use of graffiti text gives the connotation that young people live urban lifestyle and this is perhaps not a good thing as urban/run down environments are often seen as a bad thing by society due to the large amount of vandalism. Many people also accuse young people of being vandals and the use of graffiti like typography supports this stereo type as it aims to attract a younger audience. This gives a negative representation of young people as it implies that they like graffiti/vandalism.
