BIG CONCEPTHow might we make reviewing high school work
easier through visualizations?
- Manu Gupta
Making the problem specificHow might we make reviewing binomial coefficients
easier using visualizations?

Defining learning objectives
⊡ Students will be able to write and find binomial coefficients given an equation.
⊡ Students will be able to find out combinations for objects.⊡ Students will be able to explain combinations in physical
terms.⊡ Students will be able to draw Pascal’s triangle.
Defining evaluation methods
Before Designing After designing
Evaluating problem space. Observe and interviewers to understand if they understand the problem defined.
Give a questionnaire after they have worked through the visualization to measure the effectiveness of the solution.
Evaluating data to support problem space.
Given, the domain space, calculate the range of values that define our learning objectives and problem space.
Give a wider range of valuesthan defined before designing to see if the solution works for all values outside the visualization.
Evaluating visual choices that support the visualization.
Trying out Gestalt’s psychology, pre attentiveness & other design principles to suit our design.
Conduct a lab study to verify how well design principles that we applied worked well or not.
Evaluating algorithm written to for the visualization.
Write the algorithm, check for one off errors, efficiency etc.
Check in realtime how our algorithm performs. It is important with large datasets.
Define the interactions
Sketches -> Visualization
Words and pictures make a great read.
