MY MUSIC MAGAZINE AND ITSSOCIAL GROUPS

My music magazine “Nation” was ideally aimed for stereotypical indie listeners of today’s generation. People may label them as 'Hipsters’ by their appearance and fashion style. By searching these group of people, It helped me to represent these particular social groups on my magazine. However, “Hipsters” are just my stereotype ideal readers due to its fitting subculture. Other type of social group may also be targeted. Most likely the people who listens to rock, country or pop. Although, it is unlikely to engage the group of people who listens to RnB, Hiphop or other urban music.

Age:Ideally, my music magazine was

aimed for people aging from 17-30+. My target has a wide range since indie may also appeal to the older audience due to its sound (the instruments are simple but well textured and also diverse).

Therefore, I made my cover photo specifically simple yet punky to create that mature vibe into it as well as presenting its genre’s diversity (indie rock-indie pop).

Although my ideal age range is 17-30+, it is evident that my magazine is dominantly targeted to readers age ranging from 17 to mid 20’s. This is shown by containing “Freebies” on my cover photo.

Young adults would be highly interested to this since they are most likely to be unemployed or not earning as much as the adults do with full-time job. Therefore, getting ‘free stuff’ for such a prize like £5 would be a huge bargain.

Gender:My magazine “Nation” is aimed for both men and women. However my

music magazine may target females more than males. This is because of the characteristic of the genre ‘indie’.

Moreover, it may also because of my magazine’s choice of model. It is evident that I chose a female model which cause the magazine to have a girly atmosphere in it since my photograph portrays femininity through the gesture of the hand also the wave of the hair – soft and graceful.

On the other hand, the reason why it would also visually attract male too is because of the punky elements of the magazine. It had bold fonts and neutral colours (unisex colours).

Ethnicity:My magazine “Nation” would

instantly represent the majority group of ‘whites’ and a minor of ‘Asians’. This is because of my magazine’s genre alone – “Indie”.

White people are stereotyped to be individuals who listens to rock, classic rock, indie or country more than RnB and HipHop. Thus, this is what my magazine represents by the use of mise-en-sene.

It is evident that my media products contained a very limited ethnicity which may be the reason why it may only represent certain group of people. Moreover, by the way my artists portrays themselves affects the group of people my magazine represents.

All the models on my magazine are the stereotypical ‘rock’ or ‘normal’ fashion. May also be somehow classy or sassy (which may be the reason why it is mainly for girls. Though my magazine could represent both).

Here are the two main magazines I based my magazine on. In my opinion, both Kerrang represents a group of people who are in to rock/classic rock or maybe indie too through Kerrang’s and NME’s funky layout. The artists and musicians that they have used for the main cover is deliberate as it shows the biggest musician/band of its genre which links to the magazine’s genre or category.

They also back it up with the magazine’s contents (freebies, gigs, other bands) which may represent the group of people who are interested in these certain activities. Therefore, I also carefully chose my main artist and used conventional layout that represent my magazine’s genre, category and aim. Like the magazines I based it on, I represented the same social groups who are into freebies, music charts and gigs.
