WHAT IS DISTANCE EDUCATION?

"a form of education in which there is normally a separation between teacher and learner and thus one in which other means -the printed and written word,the telephone, computer conferencing or teleconferencing, for example -are used to bridge the physical gap." (Mugridge 1991)

Students can study in their own time, at the place of their choice and without face-to-face contact with a teacher.

Technology is a critical element of distance education.

THROUGH DISTANCE EDUCATION;a student is provided with the possibility of virtually attending classes and completing courses

The student is not required to leave the comfort of his home or to work on fixed schedules in order to earn a degree.

This situation is specifically convenient for people who work or who live far from educational institutions.

HOW DOES DISTANCE EDUCATION DELIVERED?

Distance education courses are delivered online.

Video tutorials are made so as to imitate the teaching as it occurs in a traditional classroom.

Online activities are designed where students can take tests and tutorials, posts and share on forums and discuss with the teachers.

In some cases, print materials or CDs are sent to the student.

Internet connection and a computer or laptop.

More recently, audio/video conferences have gained popularity.

Course instruction is provided to students through online or distance delivery methods as well as taking place in the classroom with other students and the instructors.

Faculty – success of DE effort rests squarely on the shoulders of the faculty.

Facilitators – act as a bridge between the students and the instructor.

Support Staff – these individuals are the silent heroes of the distance education enterprise

Administrators –administrators are typically influential in planning an institution’s distance education program.
