Variety choice – Hay +/- grazing, winter active vs winter dormant.
Timing of cutting (Growth Stage) – mid to late bud stage.
Timing of cutting (Time of day) – Mid morning to mid afternoon when sugars are highest.
Respiration losses – Dry to below 40% moisture as quickly as possible
Mechanical losses – Leaf shatter when raking & baling.
Weather losses – leaf shatter, slow drying – Watch weather forecast!
Storage losses – store under cover @ below 20% moisture to avoid heating.
