The early days…

• Born April 20th, 1889, Austria• After Germany’s WWI defeat, he devoted his

life to restoring their military glory

Political Career

• 1923- thrown into prison for trying to overthrow Bavarian government

• In prison, he wrote “Mein Kampf” (my struggle) which was a series of personal stories, threats vs. enemies, ideas for Germany

• 1933- Became leader of National Socialist Party- Nazi’s

Mein Kampf

Outlined his plan for Germany1) Aryans were the superior race destined to dominate

the inferior races like the Jews2) key to domination was “lebensraum” (living space),

so Germany must expand3) in order to achieve this, he promoted the “anschluss”

which was the unification of Austria and Germany4) after the anschluss, Germany would conquer Poland,

Czechoslovakia and Russia… and the rest of Europe

Rise to Power- Final Stages

• After Great Depression, Germany was in a poor state, and wanted solution to economic problems

• 1930- Nazis win 107 seats in the Reichstag• 1933- became Chancellor of Germany

• End of Democratic Republic of Germany• Beginning of Nazi Reich• 1933 marked the beginning of Jewish persecution in

Germany
