Starter – write down a place that you have always wanted to go away on holiday too. Note down why and what

difficulties there are for why you cannot go tomorrow.

Task The starter activity is similar to pilgrimages. People go on them so they can worship a

special places connected with their religion.

Most Hindu pilgrimages end at a temple. The most important are Puri, Dwarka, Rameshwaram and Badrinath. They also go to the holy city of Varanasi and the River

Ganges. As a class discuss what problems there might be for an everyday Hindu to go on Pilgrimage (use the map above for help!).

Task Your task is to write a letter to a friend as if you are returning from a Hindu pilgrimage.

Use the levelled criteria below to help with this.

Level 4Use the writing template below to help with your letter.Dear ........I am writing to you to tell you about the wonderful two weeks I have had on my pilgrimage in __________. I have been to ________________________. Although it has taken me a while to save up _____ to go, it has been well worth it. It was good to be able to express my r_______s b______fs with others. Hope you are well.

Level 5Write your own letter and include.....•Where you have been and why you went to those places;•Why you went on a pilgrimage;•What you did whilst there;

Level 6Include the points from level 5 in your letter, but also...• the emotions you felt whilst going on pilgrimage •The benefits you felt in going there and•Any problems you experienced.

Plenary

Read your letter to the person next to you, ask them to give a level they belief your letter is worth.

Then, three of you are going to read your letters to the class for them to guess the level you were given.
