2. The final question
The final section of Paper One (Close Reading) asks you to compare the two passages in order to make an evaluation.
3. Hint #1
Always look at the coding at the end of the question
The coding shows you whether you need to consider the ideas (U/E) or style (A/E) or a combination of the two (E)
4. Keep in mind:
Ideas
Purpose
Stance
Tone
Style
5. Warning!
One of the most frequent mistakes is to confuse ideas (U) with style (A)
6. Ideas (U)
Covers content and argument of the passages
Have you understood the key issues, main ideas and the development of the writers argument in each passage?
7. Style (A)
Covers all the techniques you will have studied in analysis, such as:
Sentence structure
Imagery
Word choice
8. Some advice
There are sometimes two questions in the final section
You must read the final questions very carefullythey are often worth 4 or 5 marks
You must always refer to BOTH passages (although not equally)
9. and a little more advice
Underlinekey instructions/words in each question
Look carefully at the code U/A/E
Remember you are being asked to make a judgement or to form an opinion based on close reading the passage
