HEATSTROKE

Heat stroke, also known as sun stroke, is a severe heat illness defined as hyperthermia with a body temperature greater than 40.6 C (105.1 F)

Heat stroke is an acute medical emergency caused by failure of heat regulating mechanism of the body during extended heat waves especially with high humidity.

CAUSES

-Consumption of alcohol.

-Exposure to heat for long time.

-Prolonged confinement in hot atmosphere.-Those with chronic and debilitating disease.

CAUSES CONTI………………..

-Those who are taking certain medication like diuretics and anticholinergic etc.

Signs And Symptoms

Hyperthermia of greater than 40.6 C

Signs And Symptoms

Unconsciousness or has a markedly abnormal mental status ( dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, or coma.

Signs And Symptoms

Flushed, hot, and dry skin.

Signs And Symptoms

Rectal (core) temperature of 105 F or more.

Signs And Symptoms

Lack of sweating , organ failure, and death will result.

SELF CARE AT HOME

Heat stroke is a type of medical emergency, and an ambulance should be called immediately.Rest in a cool , shaded area.

SELF CARE AT HOME

Give cool fluids such as water or sports drinks (that will replace the salt that has been lost). Salty snacks are appropriate as tolerated.Loosen or remove clothing.

Apply cool water to skin.Do not use an alcohol rub.Do not give any beverages containing alcohol or caffeine.

Move the person to a cooler environment, or place him or her in a cool bath of water(as long as he or she is conscious and can be attended continuously).Alternatively, moisten the skin with lukewarm water and use a fan to blow cool air across the skin.

Give cool beverages by mouth only if the person has a normal mental state and can tolerate it.

COLD STROKE

1. SNOW BLINDNESSIt is the condition in which the cornea of the eyes are injured due to prolonged exposure to glare produced by the reflection of the sun on show.

2.CHILBLAINChilblain is an allergic reaction of peripheral blood vascular to cold and dampness leading to vasoconstrictions .

3.HYPOTHERMIAHypothermia is a condition when the body temperature drops below 85C.

4.FROST BITE Frost bite occurs when an exposed extremity such as the nose ,ear, finger or toe freezers following exposure to prolonged and intense cold.

CAUSES

-Exposure to excessive cold.

-Climbing high altitude.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

1.Cold and pale extremities.

2.Stiffness and prickling pain.

3.Numbness.

4.Impaired movement.

5.Bluish discoloration of the skin.

FIRST AID TREATMENT

1.Reassure the casualty.2.Remove the casualty to a warm shelter.3.Remove the constrictive thing such as wrist watch, ring etc.

4.Warm the affected part by ;a)Skin to skin heat transfer(bringing the affected part in contact with the warmer body part of the casualty or yourself)b) place the affected part in a warm bath.

5. Evaluate the affected part of relieve swelling and pain.6.Transfer the casualty to the hospital.
