Halloween, the time of pumpkins, candies, ghosts, witches and much more, is annually celebrated on 31

October.

That's the night before All Saints Day. Its origins date back thousands of years to the Celtic festival of

Samhaim or The Feast of the Sun, a most significant holiday of the Celtic year. This day marked the end

of summer but also the season of darkness as well as the beginning of the New Year on 1 November.

There are fires to keep free from evil spirits.

Children love the custom of dressing-up in fancy costumes and adults enjoy the parties at home with a

special and frightening decoration, games and food.

All Saints Day-1st november=when the church commemorates all saints.

All Souls Day (fieles difuntos)-2nd november= a festival dedicated to the memory of ancestors. A day to

remember and offer prayers

In Spain people visit the cemeteries to remember their dead relatives and they clean and decorate the

graves with flowers. Some people lit candles or lights with photos of missing relatives. It's an intimate

family celebration. The motivation of the party has changed in recent days. Some years ago the death

was natural and accepted. People died at home, accompanied by family members, old and young, and

the neighbourhood. The funerals took place at home.

Nowadays, the society hasn't got a close relationship with death. Natural death is hidden. We lost the

sacred meaning of the ancestors. Our vision of the afterlife is totally different from theirs. Now the death

is in relation to spirits, ghosts, and Halloween with pumpkins and lights.
