ORIGINS

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

WHEN

• On October 31st, we celebrate Halloween, thought to be the one night of the year when ghosts, witches, and fairies are especially active.

JACK O’ LANTERNS

They are hollowed out pumpkins with a face cut into one side.

According to an Irish legend, they were named from man called Jack, who could not enter heaven because he had played jokes on the devil.

APPLE BOBBING

• Apples are placed in a tub or a large basin of water and the contestants must take one bite from one of the apples without using their hands:

• Children knock on doors demanding treat. They say “Trick or Treat.” They usually receive sweets, chocolates…

DRESSING UP

• People dress up to avoid being recognized by ghosts, witches, and fairies that are especially active on this day.
