Ramifications

Page 3: Group 4 day 2 presentation

Short Term• Economic Services decline:

• Shortage of trees and hence less material available to build furniture etc.

• Decrease in the quality of the economic services• Prices for these services increase• Economic impact to the farmers – loss of income

• Ecosystem services decline:• Disturbance & Water regulation - Drought in water supply• Food Production – Shortage of fish, vegetation etc.. -> Increase of

food prices• Decrease in quality of the food, water and air available

Page 4: Group 4 day 2 presentation

Short Term• The ecological economic efficiency (EEE) is very low

• Less vegetation therefore the road is more vulnerable to erosion bush fires and dust storms

Long Term• Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization

predicts that rainfall could drop by 40% by 2070, along with a 7C rise in temperature.

• Ecosystem service critical:• All rivers and lakes dry up, we are now in a critical state in terms of

ecosystem service.• Drought in food and water supply• Spaceman world, whereby there is no more room to grow.• Unsustainable

• Sustainability of agricultural industry

Page 7: Group 4 day 2 presentation

Long Term• Conversion of Australia from a net food importer to a net

food exporter• Lost in $ tourism• Economic Services are further exacerbated

Page 8: Group 4 day 2 presentation

Strategy• Re-planting of the rainforest• Educate• Stop adapting landscape to suit alien European farming

practices.• Start planting drought tolerant plants such as:

• Fruiting Plants: Barbados Cherry, Pineapple, Edible Fig, Avocado, Blackberry Guava, Macadamia, Mango, Pomegranate, Muscadine Grape, Lychee, Citrus

• Improve import and exporting policies - start trading• Forbid planting in certain areas • Stop subsidizing farmers in times of drought.

Page 9: Group 4 day 2 presentation

Strategy• Service efficiency: MMK services gained/NKK stock

• Improve by making all products more water efficient such as washing machines.

• Throughput efficiency: • Produce foods and keep the surplus when you are predicting a

drought i.e. not export it.
