Group 1Time-Tabling
Variables Impacting the Creation of the Master Schedule
The group is made up of members that use both the 6 Day Schedule and the Monday to Friday Schedule
Advantages of the 6 Day Schedule
• Contact time is not lost when days are missed for Public Holidays etc.
• It allows for integration of all subjects, allowing students to choose courses they actually prefer.
• Weekly changes keep the schedule dynamic for teachers and so prevent a sense of monotony.
Disadvantages of the 6 Day Schedule
• Lends itself to a longer cycle because of breaks and disruptive events
• Calendars of Events are on a week by week basis, while the 6 Day Schedule does not operate in this manner.
• Sometimes leads to confusion as to which day is which.
• Where Art and Craft are taught at a particular Level, students cannot be exposed to both areas simultaneously
Issues Faced on the Schedule (Present Day)
• All classes from the same Levels do not have an identical number of sessions
• Number of subjects offered at each school varies
• Visual Arts is compulsory at 1st and 2nd Forms for some schools
• There is not an equal distribution of students per course
• Schools’ options (what course clashes with Visual Arts, what does not, etc.) vary
• Course options may not allow students to take Visual Arts
• All students may not be exposed to Visual Arts at all Levels
Reasons for Scheduling Adjustments
• Special requirements for students working at different levels (Influx of Level III students in schools)
• Matching teacher qualifications, experience and expertise to students at different Levels (1st to 5th )
• Teachers have to be fit in based on the Master Table
• Personal Visual Arts Teachers’ timetables must be adjusted for a more effective Department.
• A need for communication between teachers across all levels with regards to material covered.
• Interests of the teacher that may conflict with working at a variety of levels (attitude and perception)
• Unequal period scheduling at particular Levels
Obstacles Encountered in Rescheduling Timetable
• Number of rooms available for use
• Classes at the same Level using the space at the same time. Classes at different Levels using the space at the same time.
• One teacher having classes at different Levels at the same time.
• The maximum number of periods a teacher should teach per day.
