DESCRIPTION
This presentation addresses educators, parents and researchers interested in exploring how digital open content, innovative tools and educational scenarios can support environmental education at school level and beyond. Building on inquiry-based and resource based teaching approaches, this presentation will introduce accessible authoring and discovery tools that can help educators connect classrooms with science centres, museums and global collections of high quality openly accessible educational resources.

“The education landscape is changing dramatically, from school to university and beyond: open technology-based education will soon be a 'must have', not just a 'good-to-have', for all ages.” Androulla Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth
“Education must be connected to real life; it cannot be a parallel universe. Young people want to use digital technology in every aspect of life.” Neelie Kroes, Commission Vice-President
Brussels, 25 September 2013
The Commission launches 'Opening up Education' to boost innovation and digital skills in schools and universities

Need to acknowledge cost-efficient solutions, and avoid waste of resources e.g. teachers around the world preparing the same lesson; reduce families’ spending on educational materials
Need for innovative organisations, innovative teachers and innovative learners - it is not sufficient anymore to just provide technology
Opening up Education initiative proposes more action in three areas: - open learning environments - open educational resources - connectivity and innovation

Scenario 1: Let’s imagine…
I am a biology teacher in a primary school and I want to organise my next lesson outdoors, exploring with my pupils a local water ecosystem…
I would need resources to help me organise this lesson… Where can I find great environmental resources for school pupils?

Scenario 2: Now let’s imagine…
I am a natural sciences teacher and for my lesson on Insects I want to show my pupils a nice collection of images of insects. The handbook includes only a few images and the school doesn’t have more resources…
Where can I find a great collection of images of Insect to show my pupils?

How can the Green Learning Network help teachers and learners? (2/2)
How can Educational pathways help teachers? •Aim to bridge classroom and museum learning•Embed learning in a context that allows the preparation of the learner before and after the museum visit (on site or virtual) •Ensure proximity between the curriculum and teaching methods on the one hand, and the learning environment on the other•Integrate technology and OER in the learning process•Empower teachers to create, publish and share own materials

Once again, let’s imagine…
I am an environmental sciences teacher and I would like to plan a visit to the Botanical Garden to show my pupils the beautiful plans, but also make sure they learn something.
I would like to combine this with my lesson on plant morphology, but I am not sure how…

A few solutions…
• Access the website of your local Botanical Garden to search for tips and resources
• Explore out the Green Learning Network collection of Educational pathways to find similar activities and resources http://greenlearningnetwork.org/natural-europe/educational/
• Create your own customised educational activity using the Pathway Authoring Tool
What is the Pathway Authoring Tool?
•a web based tool that can be used to build complex web resources with a story like structure•can be used to model educational and researcher activities•includes a digital library of resources that authors can manage and use as a data pool to build their stories •digital library can be enriched with resources from external data sources e.g. Europeana and social sites e.g. YouTube, SlideShare•authors can create their own structure for the web resource or select from a list of predefined structures•currently hosting >80 educational pathways for school learning and adult learning
ODS Webinar 1: ODS Webinar 1: Green Learning Network (GLN)Green Learning Network (GLN)
Pedagogical approach behind Inquiry-based learning•understand the topic investigated and consolidate knowledge by collecting and interpreting information, discussing, reflecting and presenting their findings•encouraging interaction and collaboration between students
Resource-based learning•a student-centred approach encouraging hand-on interaction and use of OER•the role of the teacher is to guide and assist the learner
ODS Webinar 1: ODS Webinar 1: Green Learning Network (GLN)Green Learning Network (GLN)
Using the Pathway Authoring Tool teachers can create their own pathways
http://education.natural-europe.eu/natural_europe/admin/users/login
Edit each section of the pathway
Upload images and insert supporting material
After saving and publishing, this is how your Educational Pathway will look like
Supporting materials from Europeana, Wikipaitings, OER repositories
