Definition of Green Jobs, Selected Studies

PERI, 2008 Focuses on the kinds of jobs needed to build a green economy in the United

States based on six key strategies for attacking global warming: “building retrofitting, mass transit, energy-efficient automobiles, wind power, solar power, and cellulosic biomass fuels.”

Global Insight, 2008 “Green activities” are defined as “Any activity that generates electricity

using renewable or nuclear fuels, agriculture jobs supplying corn or soy for transportation fuel, manufacturing jobs producing goods used in renewable power generation, equipment dealers and wholesalers specializing in renewable energy or energy-efficiency products, construction and installation of energy and pollution management systems, government administration of environmental programs, and supporting jobs in the engineering, legal, research and consulting fields.”

John J. Heldrich Center, 2009 “Green jobs can be broadly defined as jobs that involve protecting wildlife or

ecosystems, reducing pollution or waste, or reducing energy usage and lowering carbon emissions.”

PEW, 2009 “A clean energy economy generates jobs, businesses and investments while

expanding clean energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, waste and pollution, and conserving water and other natural resources.”
