This session helps entrepreneurs answer questions such as: Is there a market for your good or service? Who else is doing what you want to do? Where should your business be located? Who is your targeted market?

Legal – This session will cover the legality of starting a business: legal structure, permits, licensing requirements, etc.

Finance – How to finance your business -T his session covers the various financing options available to entrepreneurs.

Accounting – How to manage your money - This session covers the responsibilities of managing your money: financial management, record keeping, tax implications, etc.

Sales – This session teaches entrepreneurs sales techniques to effectively sell their goods or services.

Marketing – This session teaches entrepreneurs how to market their business, the importance of a marketing plan, and the different methods to effectively market their business.

GREEN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT & CERTIFICATION (CONSTRUCTION TRADES)

Piedmont Virginia will research and develop a curriculum in green construction and/or project management. The program will prepare students for emerging positions in the construction industry- specifically, construction supervisors and green building inspectors. This program will become part of the PVCC Construction Academy.

THOMAS NELSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE

INSTITUTE FOR EXCELLENCE IN GREEN BUILDING, LANDSCAPING AND HORTICULTURE USING UNIVERSAL DESIGN (AGRIC, FORESTRY & ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES, CONSTRUCTION TRADES)

Thomas Nelson will develop curriculum to prepare students for careers in Environmental Services and the Construction Trades. The curriculum will be infused with both green content and universal design principles. Four new non-credit courses will be rolled into a new Construction, Landscaping and Horticulture Certificate Program.

   

NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

VIRGINIA ALTERNATIVE ENERGY OPPORTUNITIES (ENGINEERING, ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES)

New River Community College will “piggy back” NRCC 2007 IE project in wind energy by supporting the creation of modules on photovoltaic (PV), geothermal, and solar thermal energies. NRCC will partner with NRCC’s Business & Technology Division and local corporations to develop a seamless pathway for students to advance in skills, knowledge and employment related to alternative energy fields.

INSTITUTES OF EXCELLENCE IN GREEN CONSTRUCTION AND RECONSTRUCTION (AGRIC, FORESTRY & ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES; CONSTRUCTION TRADES)

Building on the strength and foundation of current and near-term courses focusing on construction and building trades. The funding will support the development and offering of green construction and remodeling, energy conservation and environmental sustainability courses and the modification of existing courses such as landscaping design. An Energy Forum will be held to discuss these issues, raise community awareness and stimulate interest and attract students.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY PATHWAY (CONSTRUCTION TRADES)

Develop career pathway program for modern construction and building trades including traditional and less traditional energy auditing and weatherization. Pipeline to include computer aided drafting in construction. Program comprises non-credit, credit, certificate and degree opportunities.
