Graphic Novels--or Just Comics? 5Graphic Novels:Here to Stay!Graphic novels exist in a broad range of

genres: humor, romance, suspense, political satire, soap operas, horror, porn, Japanese manga, nonfiction journalism. In 2006, Publishers Weekly reported, 2,800 new titles were published. For the first time, graphic novels surpassed standard comic books in sales, $330 million to $310 million."The days when publishers aimed at only 15-year-old boys - or 50-year-old men who are shopping for their inner 15-year-old - those days are over," said Calvin Reid of Publishers Weekly. •The big battle: It's edge versus respectability as graphic novels go mainstream

Graphic Novels--or Just Comics? 6Define Graphic Novel?

graphic novel A term coined by Will Eisner to describe his semi-autobiographical novel A Contract with God (1978), written and illustrated in comic book style, the first work in a new format in which an extended narrative is presented as a continuous sequence of pictorial images printed in color or black and white and arranged panel-to-panel, with text given in captions and dialogue usually enclosed in balloons.

Graphic Novels--or Just Comics? 14A classic:Bone

No Bones About It By Andrew D. Arnold Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 It seemed like folly. Twelve years ago (from

2004) Jeff Smith decided to write, draw and self-publish "Bone," an all-ages, black and white humor/adventure series. Not only did he have no experience at producing a regular comic book, the popularity of such titles had long since bottomed out with the end of the Mutant Turtles. In spite of these challenges, "Bone" proved to be so polished and enjoyable the series grew into a beloved, multiple-award winning favorite of kids and adults.

Graphic Novels--or Just Comics? 23MangaWhat is Manga?

Manga is Japanese comic books, or graphic novels. The actual word “manga” is Japanese for comics. It was started in the 1940’s by Osamau Tetzuka. The first manga series was Astro Boy or Tetsuwan Atom, in Japanese.

Most manga is originally written and drawn in Japan which is why the book is flipped backwards.

MangaWhat is Manga?

“It used to be fairly straightforward to say that manga were black-and-white comics originating in Japan,” Mr. Kiley [Mike Kiley, the senior vice president of the publisher Tokyopop] wrote. “But for many years now, there have been manga ‘variants’ in many places around the world,” including manhwa in Korea and original English language manga in the United States.• Graphic Books Best-Sellers: What Is Manga?

What about anime?

What is anime? (ah-nee-may, is one way to romanize the pronunciation) Anime, as defined by common fan usage, is

simply any animation that is made in Japan for a Japanese audience. In Japan the word simply means any animation made anywhere in the world. Commercial anime dates back to 1917. Graphic Novels--or Just Comics? 29Is manga declining in

the US?Loved to Death – Manga is in trouble in the

USA Dang it I even love Manga, and will miss

its eventual demise, because truly this is one medium that has been loved to death. It was loved so much that people couldn’t wait for it to hit the book stores, and while Piracy is not the only real reason that Manga has failed badly to recover market share, the aging of the audience, and lack of good solid story lines that translate beyond age 12 have pretty much so killed this puppy. That is sad; it is something that is worth preserving.

Graphic Novels--or Just Comics? 34What about other

formats?Novels in verse• Author Terry Farish “learned multiple reasons

for using the verse form: To reflect a culture’s music and literary heritage; to offer reprises of the rhythm of a language; to create a fast pace of lines that mirrors the character’s own ride; to bring the cinematic camera intimately close. I also learned a derivation of the term verse. It is from the Latin word versus, meaning a furrow, and literally a turning (of a plough). This takes me to a personal image of writers as laborers. Writing is the work of the hands. I smell the dirt as the line turns.”
