You should allow NZD $80-$150 per paper for required text books. This will be approximately NZD

$500 for the full year-long qualification.

Upon successful completion of this Graduate Diploma, you will be well-suited for employment in a

supervisory or management capacity within the accommodation, hospitality and tourism-related

sectors, including hotels, resorts, restaurants, events and convention centres. You could even think

about setting up your own small business.

You will be able to use your knowledge to evaluate operational matters and to implement processes

across a range of specialist areas including operations management and marketing services.

You must complete three hotel management papers at Level 6, two papers at Level 7 and a 45-credit

industry project.

LEVEL 6

Facilities Management

Develop an understanding of facilities management within the hotel industry. Examine and evaluate

key functions and responsibilities in the management and operation of specialised facilities, property

and inventories.

Rooms Division Operations Management

Gain the skills and knowledge to develop, implement and monitor management planning in the

operations of the front office and housekeeping division. Explore and evaluate the current

management practice required by the sector. Make the appropriate management responses to

changes in the operating environments through the analysis of each of the fundamental management

issues used in a quality accommodation services operation.

Services Marketing Management

Gain an understanding of the roles, functions and application of services marketing management

within contemporary New Zealand organisations. Explore the key resources, skills, techniques,

attitudes and ethics required to operate successfully in a range of service environments.

LEVEL 7

Contemporary Issues in the Hotel Industry

Undertake an in-depth analysis of the up-to-date issues that impact on modern management

practices within the hotel industry. This course will build on the knowledge and skills you have

developed in the earlier papers which introduced you to the basics of marketing and management.

Strategic Management

Gain an understanding of the application of strategic management and the management processes

aimed at improving organisational effectiveness by means of a systematic set of strategic goals, plans

and actions. Analyse and evaluate the use of strategic management concepts and problems within

business, through research of strategic analysis, choice and the implementation of various

management practices and philosophies.

This programme of study generally includes lectures and seminars/tutorials. You will be expected to

contribute at least 20 hours per week of your own time in self-directed study to allow for successful

completion of the qualification. You will also complete a 200-hour internship. The internship is an

educational model that integrates academic studies with relevant work experience. This gives you the

chance to apply the knowledge you have acquired in a real-life, hands-on situation and will be

attractive to your future employers!
