Research: an overview• What is research?

– It is the search for knowledge– We discover, examine, prove/refute fact

• What kind of information are we seeking?– Qualitative Data – Quantitative Data

• Where do we extract our information from?• How can we access the data we need?• What are the legal ramifications if I do not cite someone

SAMPLE EXERCISE 1Case Study: John Wayne Bobbitt

Scenario: Lorena Bobbitt cuts off her husband’s penis. She reportedly ‘loses it’ after her husband, John Wayne, allegedly raped her. She is arrested and put on trial for her violent crime. Soon after her acquittal, she files for divorce from John Wayne Bobbitt, on the grounds that he had repeatedly abused her throughout their marriage. Doctors testified that Lorena Bobbitt may have been suffering from mental illness at the time of the crime. The couple has been divorced since 1995.

Domestic violence has become a major social issue as a result of this case.

SAMPLE EXERCISE 2Case Study: Comedian Phil Hartman

Scenario: Saturday Night Live comedian and actor, Phil Hartman, is gunned down by his wife, Brynn, who commits suicide several hours later after realizing what she had done. Hartman’s shocking death revealed a darker side of his wife, Brynn, who allegedly had substance abuse problems. It was known that her drug addiction fueled bouts of rage because she was jealous about Hartman’s success. The guy was in-demand. Stories circulated posthumously that Hartman had given Brynn the ultimatum – that he would leave her if she continued to abuse drugs.

Once again, domestic violence becomes a national topic of discussion as a result of tragedy.
