General José de San Martin (1778-1850)

General of the Army of the Andes and liberator of Argentina, Chile and Perú. He was born in Yapeyú; Corrientes. He created the Mounted Grenadiers

Regiment and defeated the Spanish at the Battle of San Lorenzo. Then he took command of the

Northern Army, crossed the Andes and drove the royalists from Chile, and later he defeated the

Spanish in Perú. He exiled to Europe to avoid being part of the civil war. He died in France.

René Favaloro (1923-2000)

Cardiologist. He revolutionized medicine with the heart bypass technique. He created a style of social medicine at the service of man, first as a doctor in a remote rural village of La Pampa and then from his foundation, where he made tens of heart transplants. His institution benefits provided highly complex

and expensive heart treatments to the neediest, without demanding compensation. Unexpectedly, he committed suicide

in 2000.

Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820)

Lawyer, journalist and military. He won the first battles of the independence under the command of the First Army Patriot,

and was a member of “La Primera Junta”. He founded the Commercial Telegraph, the first newspaper in Buenos Aires. He created the flag of Argentina and received 40.000 pesos from the national government in return for their liberating work. He gave his fortune to build four schools that were

never completed. He died in Buenos Aires, in abject of poverty.

Eva Duarte “Evita” (1919-1952)

She was a politician. For her activity in favor of the most humble she earned the nickname “the bearer of the poor”.

She worked for the expansion of social rights, legal and political rights of women, among other things. In 1946 she led the women's vote. She was an important figure in the mobilization of the disadvantaged: she negotiated and got

help for million of women, children and the elderly. Her work permitted others to take action outside the

bureaucratic structure.

Ernesto Guevara “Che” (1928-1967)

He was a physician and a universal figure of revolutionary movements. He participated in the Revolution Cuba in

1969 . He assisted the new government in the continent. He wrote and published his ideas, which served as

inspiration for generations of popular fighters. He tried to recreate the success of the Cuban experience in South

America. Finally, he was executed in the Bolivian jungle.

Diego Armando Maradona (1960)

He is player and soccer coach. He dressed shirts of Argentinos Juniors, Boca, Barcelona, Napoli, Seville and Newell´s Old

Boys. He is considered the best football player of all the times. With Argentina he won the World Cup in 1979, in 1986 and in

1993 the Artemio Franchi Cup. He was Metropolitan champion with Boca (1981). He won a cup with Barcelona

(1983), and with Napoli he won two Italian titles in the Italian cup. He won UEFA Cup and Italian Super Cup, too.

Carlos Gardel (1890/1875-1935)

Carlos Gardel was a singer, songwriter and an actor naturalized Argentine. He is consider the most important

“tanguero” of the first half of the 20th century. According to researchers, he was born in Toulouse, France on December 11, 1890, according to others; he was born in Tacuarembó,

Uruguay, on December 18, 1875, living since his childhood in Buenos Aires. He died on June 24, 1935 in Medellin Colombia,

in a plane crash.

Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986)

He was a writer, one of the glories of universal literature. For many people he should have received the Nobel Prize for Literature. His work includes short stories, essays, poems,

biographies, book reviews and prefaces. Among his intellectual interests were highlighted mythology,

mathematics, theology, philosophy and, as their integration, the ‘Borgesian’ sense of literature as recreation. His works

were translated into over twenty languages and made into a film and television.

Manuel Fangio (1911-1995)He was a formula 1 pilot. In his career he won 24

competitions and won world titles in five opportunities with a detail that made him unique: he

is the only driver in history that did it with four different brands (Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari and

Mercedes-Benz). In 1982 he was named ‘Best Driver of All Times’ by the international Racing Press

Association.

Alberto Olmedo (1933-1988)

Actor and comedian. In the 60 he marked a whole generation with “El Capitan Piluso”, “Operación JaJa” and “No Toca

Boton”. In 1973 he made his debut in films and in 1986 in theater. He died in Mar del Plata, after falling from a balcony

in an unexplained accident.
