•Chronic diseases—such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes—are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.

•Chronic diseases account for 70% of all deaths in the U.S., which is 1.7 million each year. These diseases also cause major limitations in daily living for almost 1 out of 10 Americans or about 25 million people.

• The Iowa Sports Foundation/Iowa Games was founded in 1987

• The Iowa Games sports festivals offer Olympic-style competition for athletes of all ages and abilities

• Summer Games and Winter Games events offered

In 2009, 29,676 Iowans participated in a Live Healthy program. These participants lost over 135,000 pounds and logged over 75 million minutes of activity.

Since its beginning in 2002, over 150,000 people have participated in the program, logging 26.2 million miles of activity and losing 612,147 pounds.

• GTDD began in 2004, with 97 schools and 27,030 youth participating

• In 2009, GTDD grew to have 179 schools and 40,604 youth participate

• GTDD shows Iowa youth that physical activity is fun and makes them feel good!

• The program increases public awareness of youth physical inactivity

• Inform the public that physical education programs and recess are needed in our schools!

Go The Distance Day (GTDD) is a FREE, one-day event for Iowa schools.

• Most popular activity schools plan is a walk to school or around town

• Schools also do pick up trash around the community as the activity for the day.

These activities allow students to become familiar with the community surrounding the school

Through the Iowans Fit for Life partnership a walkability assessment was created in 2009.

The Iowa Sports Foundation cash prizes:• 1-$1,000• 4-$500

To be eligible for the cash prizes the school has to report 100% participation for the school during their event

Cash prizes must go towards their physical education programs at the school

Clayton Ridge Schools• The students below completed their one mile

walk to the new athletic complex and a lap around the track and then completed another one mile walk back to the school.

• In conjunction with Walk to School Day, 2009 was our first year for Fall Fitness Day

• Fall Fitness Day is a FREE, one-day event for Iowa schools

• The school plans a 30 minutes continuous activity for their students

• Register and report 100% participation, eligible for Monetary Awards

their physical activity levels and make better food choices!

ChallengeIn 2009, 9,587 youth on 484 teams logged over 32 million minutes of activity!

Since 2004, over 47,000 Iowa youth have participated in the program and logged over 9 million miles of activity.
